Stevenage 1 Charlton Athletic 1 (Charlton win 5-4 on pens)

I know little or nothing of last night’s dramatic cup victory as I have spent the entire week moving around Nevada and California.

During yesterday’s game I was in the Californian desert at a gigantic casino in meetings trying to grab quick looks at my phone for updates from Hertfordshire.

I think I’m right in saying that we were pretty dire for 80 minutes, but finally came to life, and super subs Chuks grabbed an equalizer.

Penalties followed, all five of ours were beautifully dispatched and Joe made the all important save.

Once again our shots on goal to stats ratio was rubbish, but I’m sure it didn’t matter to Addicks, who made up a third of the attendance. I bet the celebrations were long and loud.

It’s been a good cup week. Back to league action Saturday.

Ben Garner: “The standard of penalties was absolutely brilliant,” said Garner. “I don’t remember seeing five better than that in a penalty shootout. It is a great save from Jojo to top it all off.”

Stats (CAFC first): Possession – 71% / 29%; Passes – 389 / 156; Accurate passes – 330 / 109; Shots (on target) – 8 (2) / 17 (6)

Delighted to get through and agree we were lucky at the end….pity to hear Steve Evans moaning about the win….typical Evans and I expect the 4th official had ear-ache during the game.
Let’s hope we get a prem team next round !

The statistics do not support Evan’s comments neither do the Addicts “shots” and “shots on target”. With the heavy defence setup that Stevenage had, I doubt you could have done much. As for being the better team, if it wasn’t for the penalty they would have scored zilch and Aneke’s goal put the Addicts the winner without the necessity of penalty shoot outs.

The statistics show that our possession was almost irrelevant, especially if it was just fannying around with the ball in our own half. (I didn’t see the match.) Stevenage had twice the number of shots and three times as many on target from a possession of 29%! It’s not how much possession that counts, rather what you do with it. To my mind these match statistics just encapsulate what is wrong with our approach. Why can our wingers/win-backs/wide-men (whatever you wish to call them) not get up near the corner and deliver the ball on to Stockley or Inniss’ head!!! And why can JFC not get a match? BG has completely lost me here (assuming he is allowed to pick JFC).

    • Wayne, spot on and not rocket science to get our wingers to cross the ball from the byline

If BG’s never seen penalties that good he needs to get a video of 98!
