Just the one out on loan

What with first Beram Kayal’s delayed loan and then the ongoing signing of Tomer Hemed, transfer deadline day was a bit of a moving target for us Addicks, but yesterday’s transfer deadline #2 didn’t really shake any foundations as only one young squad member headed out on loan.
Brendan Wiredu goes out on loan to Colchester United until January. The 19-year featured in Lee Bowyer’s pre-season plans and was at Bromley at the end of last season. Colchester have good pedigree of producing and improving young players and Wiredu made his debut tonight for the U’s in the EFL trophy.
Surprising was that there was no deadline loan move for either Albie Morgan nor Alfie Doughty. George Lapslie and Macauley Bonne both had interest but Bowyer wants to keep them around the squad, yet he openly promoted his aspirations for Morgan to get out and ‘play men’s football and learn the game,’ but nothing obviously materialized.
With a very robust squad now at his disposal Bowyer suggested this past weekend that right back Adam Matthews might well be offered a contract. The Welshman has been at Sparrows Lane a couple of weeks. Tyrone Mears has been released. Here’s a good article on Matthews here. Mind you fears that Chris Solly’s legs have gone were refuted again at Reading.
Also yesterday Bowyer felt inclined to deny any move to Huddersfield, after they supposedly stepped up their interest.
Adam Matthews is a done deal and on paper a good signing. Given the state of Chris Solly’s knees he can’t play every game and certainly not twice in a week so it makes sense to have experienced cover and we needed an extra player in defence anyway. Although Solly was excellent at Reading that game came after a two week enforced break for concussion.
