Charlton Athletic 0 Forest Green Rovers 0 (3-5 on penalties)

Wembley, Wembley, we’re the famo.. oh.
Come on, we’ve already been there once this year. The Addicks limped out of the Carabao Cup last night, a result I’m not particularly bothered about. Our expectations in cup competitions are so low. Lee Bowyer was scathing of the team’s performance and although he said he put a team out that he thought could win the game, it showed again that our squad beyond the first 18 is still very light.
Brendan Wiredu and Alfie Doughty both started as full backs, Sam Field and Macauley Bonne made their full debuts and academy players Wilberforce Ocran and Junior Quitirna came on as subs in the 2nd half before the game ended goalless and went to penalties.
Albie Morgan was particularly disappointing, and missed his spot kick as Forest Green scored all of theirs to move into the 2nd Round, where they were drawn away to Bournemouth.
We should have won the game in normal time when the best move of the game ended with Naby Sarr being fouled in the box. Jake Forster-Caskey stepped up but had his penalty saved.
Only Sarr and Ben Amos came in for any praise by Bowyer with Doughty the most impressive youngster on show.
Addicks at The Valley: Doctor Kish;
Bow: “Too many performances weren’t good enough, that’s what it boils down too. There was too much casualness, not enough urgency.”
Elsewhere: We weren’t the only Championship club dumped out of the competition last night. Barnsley lost at home to Carlisle 3-0, Cambridge won at Brentford on pens, Lincoln won at Huddersfield 1-0 and Crewe won at Middlesbrough on pens. West Brom, Wigan and Bristol City lost to Millwall, Stoke and QPR respectively.

Disappointing that Morgan had a poor game, I think his confidence has been knocked by Bowyer saying he will go out on loan. I think Lapslie and Sarpong did OK. I thought Bowyer would have played three at the back because Sarpong and Doughty are strong going forward so are more potential wing backs than fullbacks. Mystery why Stevenson did not play a part even from the bench,as he did not play in the U23 game on Monday. The game also proved how reliant we are on Taylor up front in the first team as Aneke and Bonne did not impress.
