Charlton Athletic 2 Gillingham 0

Another straightforward home win. We could get used to this.

Gills showing up without talisman Tom Eaves was a real plus, and although we were often sloppy in our passing, the Kent side never threatened after we took a 6th minute lead. They did however start the brighter and came close to taking the lead themselves hitting the outside of a post.

Fosu was back to his last season’s best, and if we are going to challenge for top-two then Fosu’s form will be a requirement. His ball into Reeves for the first was inch perfect and the midfielder finished well scoring his first goal since April.

In fact two midfielders scored yesterday, which is a nice trend. Our last three goals coming from the midfield. We were dominate in the first period. Fosu hit the bar and Reeves saw a shot saved.

Fosu was on fire though, and when like this one of the most exciting players outside of the top two tiers. His goal was breathtaking and a nod back to some of his from last season.

The 2nd half was more pedestrian. Reeves should have got a second, but we cruised through to another 3 points in front of a noisy and festive Valley crowd and the largest of the season.

Into 4th now and halfway through the season. Bowyer said that he will have the players in tomorrow and Christmas Day in preparation for Coventry.

It’s not just the imminent appearance of Santa, but I feel a little buzz around us Addicks.

Bow: “I probably would say that is the worst we’ve played for a while.”
Elsewhere: In the big game Portsmouth beat 10-man Sunderland 3-1. Luton won again, that’s 11 wins out of 13. They beat Burton at home. Peterborough drew at home to Walsall 1-1, Doncaster were pegged back by a 97th minute Oxford equaliser and Coventry lost at an improving Shrewsbury.

We played well last week against Wimbledon but were moderate against a team missing their best two players Eaves and Ehmer yesterday. Fosu is nearly back to top form but faded in the last 15 mins. as much mental as well as physical tiredness but the minutes played should improve match fitness further. Hacket-Fairchild played 15 mins. and did himself no harm,in fact he did more in 15 mins. than Ajose did in 90+mins.- no surprise there.I thought Solly had a good game and seems comfortable on the left. Bielik alternates between good and moderate performances in the defensive midfield role – he seems more consistent when playing at the back.

    • Rierti – what are your thoughts on Solly’s season so far?

Solly has done well this season. He has had severe injury problems over the last few seasons and has to be carefully game managed to prevent further problems – so all credit to him. I think he has played better this year than the last two or three years and has adapted well to playing on the left side and is growing more confident with experience. He is a great club man.
