Southgate you’re the one

I really enjoyed that England performance today. Someone at UEFA should be feeling very proud of themselves at work tomorrow as the Nations League is looking like an innovative success.

Wembley was alive today and as far removed from a comotosed stadium watching a monotonous and meaningless friendly than you could get. It was great to see and hear how the crowd serenaded both Gareth Southgate and the players afterwards following a superb calendar year for the national team.

The World Cup campaign was fantastic but the question remained. Can we beat the top nations? Well the Nations Cup answered that, and from what I saw, these were highly competitive matches played by full strength teams. For once I actually enjoyed an international break and during those last 10 minutes Wembley rocked.

For the first time in decades I’m finding myself really getting behind this English team and manager, and I’m clearly not alone, and I look forward to the next installment. And wasn’t Joe Gomez outstanding?

In general I am pleased with performances under Southgate. Gomez was outstanding defender, and I was impressed with Barclay and Delph in midfield, both subbed presumably because of tiring. My one gripe is how does Sterling get 90 minutes?
