Bolton agree a fee for Magennis

According to Rich Cawley. I would count Josh Magennis as gone by the middle of next week, with the only variable being that Peterborough come back with a matched or better offer. Posh are flush with cash after selling Jack Marriott to Derby. Marriott was the top scorer in League One last season with 27 goals. Magennis got 10.

Not in anybodies imagination is Magennis a goalscorer, but he has lots of attributes and brings others into the game in offensive situations, and is very useful in defence at set-pieces. At 27, you’d have thought the Northern Irish international would want to try his arm at a higher level. Bolton had £500,000 bid rejected by Charlton for Magennis in January.

Rumour has it that Nicky Ajose may also be moved on before the transfer deadline.

I’m disappointed to see Magennis leave as I’d see him as an important component in a promotion seeking squad. He has good qualities coming off the bench for example. Ajose’s overall desire and play under Bowyer was good, but his goal record was not.

Magennis, like many others, is in his last year of his contract, which puts us in a difficult bargaining situation. If Bolton’s offer is £600,000, it will be £200,000 in January!

Vitally, who the hell is going to fill their shirts? we may look to Taylor to get us goals, but Magennis, who Karl Robinson overplayed, still got 17% of our league goals last season.

If the fee is anywhere near £600k as reported/suggested then I’d bite their hand off. Since he signed in 80 odd games he has scored just 20 goals, he lacks the killer instinct in front of goal. But he gets into good positions and you can’t fault his work ethic. We need a number 10 to play alongside Taylor and hopefully the money or some of it will be spent on that.

I rate Magennis and will be sorry to see him go. Robinson never gave him the proper support players and even Bowyer had to put Ajose as his support striker because KR had tied Grant to a non recall loan at Crawley. Magennis does not play as a no.9 for Northern Ireland but wide right as a wing back and performs significant attacking and defensive duties well.
