A loan in, but not a striker

Charlton have signed Francis Coquelin on loan from Arsenal until December 1st, the club announced this afternoon.

The 23-year old Frenchman is predominately a defensive midfielder but is also comfortable at full back. Coquelin joined Arsenal in 2008 and has played 40 matches, mostly in various cup competitions. Last season he was on loan at Bundesliga side Freiburg.

My immediate thought is that i hope he is more Alex Song than Emmanuel Frimpong, but according to Arsenal fans Coquelin is a box to box midfielder with a good range of passing and a willing runner. Not to be sniffed at as I think we lack pace and players that can press opponents. Coquelin also adds much needed competition especially with Bulot out.

I understand the deal can be extended beyond December 1st as Charlton only play four games including tomorrow in that time.

Could be a shrewd one, CA, cover for booking-prone Buyens, possibly for Jackson. Didn’t know he also played full-back which is a plus with Solly’s restricted appearances and Gomez’s continuing injury. Bit surprised Arsenal let him out, what with someone blowing too hard on Wilshere once again, but I guess he’s not named in their Europe squad, so in need of games.

Tend to agree Geoff. Always happy to have a good young player with an excellent apprenticeship and coaching behind him as part of the squad and I am sure Bob is too. Question always relates to desire.
