Blackpool 0 Charlton Athletic 3

“I said to them you might not be the best players but you must be the best squad in terms of team spirit, of collaboration and in commitment.”

I had an unusual feeling listening to the game this morning, well two actually. Firstly I was relaxed, no anxiety, no irrational obsessions, just me, the commentary, a cup of coffee and warm buttered toast.

The second strange realization was that in the 2nd half it sounded as if we could score at will. Another quarter of an hour and Callum would’ve had 6. What’s with that?

Callum Harriott, the man of the hour, day and week. Vilified at home to Barnsley, Champions League next season with Standard Liege. I hope I am joking.

A great way to wrap up the season then and credit to Jose Riga and the players, who had a lot less to play for than their hosts, but they iced the cake of a memorable weekend by the sea for 1,400 Addicks.

I was quite surprised by the team picked, I mean it was a good one with Solly being rested, but no more sign of some of Duchâtelet’s offerings except for Ajdarević, who got a rousing reception when he was taken off near the end. I wonder if we’ll see the Swede again?

We end 18th then (2nd best team in South London) and it is incredulous to think that we could have lost our last two games, drawn at Sheffield Wednesday and still stayed up. So after the agonizing defeat to Barnsley, only two more points were required! Who was panicking?

Definitely I imagine Birmingham City’s supporters were panicking with 12 minutes to go, that was an incredible turnaround for them at Bolton. They were dead and buried and Doncaster, whose rear guard action was finally pierced by a Leicester penalty just after the Blues had pulled a goal back, are relegated. To be replaced by Brentford. Football, eh.

As expected Millwall won, although they had no need to, likewise Blackpool, whose win at Wigan last week, completely out of sequence to their dreadful form, saved them.

As for the Addicks, they finish in style and with a smile, which papers over a wretched campaign, but a final week at least that we can saviour.
