Happy New Year

Tonight, 3 years ago Charlton’s Official Site burst into life announcing that the club had come off the life support machine and been bought by Michael Slater and Tony Jimenez, with a clandestine third party rumoured to be sat behind the scenes.

24 months later, no one can be surprised at the shroud of confusion that exists over another proposed takeover. Stories are circling that Roland Duchâtelet has pulled out of a £14m deal, whilst the official word is that negotiations continue. There may also be other suitors sitting in the wings watching the currents owner’s negotiating power getting weaker by the day.

What is certain is that our beloved football club is back on the life support machine and as the clock passes midnight tonight Addicks everywhere will enter the new year with a sense of trepidation as our owners continue to operate in darkness away from loyal supporter’s eyes.

Personally 2013 has been a pretty good year. I have always lived by the motto of always having something to look forward to, which may account for how quick time passes. Then again it could just be old age. There were plenty of new memories and I remember the laughs over the lows.

Our year concludes tonight with a group of friends, a few glasses of Rioja and bounteous dishes of takeaway Indian food. Before that we will take our 4-year old to a local hotel for a mocktail and a pizza.

I always think that New Year’s Eve is a time for reflection, and wine and curry of course. Whatever you are reflecting on tonight, I hope it is with a smile on your face and if you are happy to see the back of 2013, then I hope 2014 brings more optimism. That applies to one family in particular that I am very close to. I have been thinking of them especially today.
