Cup half empty
Whilst Powelly this morning probably told the players not to worry themselves over the abysmal performance on Saturday and concentrate on the league, many of the supporters, and not surprisingly those that paid good money to sit through it, can’t seem to shake it from their memories.
Dave took to his loft to find out exactly how rubbish our Cup form was and he did. He wrote that in 66 seasons, we have failed to win an FA Cup match in 34 of them! In fact by my own calculations we won a quarter of as many FA Cup matches in two seasons – 1945/46 and 1946/47 than we did in the next 66.
As Dave points out, since we lifted the famous Cup in 1947 Charlton have had only four Cup runs, namely in 1981 (lost to then old Div 1 leaders Ipswich), 1994 (went out to then Premier League leader Manchester United), in 2000 (lost to Bolton Wanderers) and in 2006 (went out Middlesborough). Truly shocking.
In fact one of Dave’s commenters indicated that Charlton do in fact have the worst FA Cup record in the top two divisions. Heaven help the club if they draw Burnley at home next season.
Anyway in some good news Rhoys Wiggins will play in a practice game tomorrow, his first game since the middle of September when he fractured his leg against Palace.
Leon Clarke has had his contract terminated by the club and immediately signed a two and a half year contract with Coventry. Powell hs talked of freeing up some wages to be able to act in the January transfer window. Any potential Danny Hollands move to Swindon or extension of his loan looks like being down to how much change Paulo Di Canio can find down the back of his sofa!
Finally I was surprised to see Wolves appoint Dean Saunders as their new boss when Sean O’Driscoll was waiting in the wings. I have always admired O’Driscoll and I believe he is a Wolves fan and that his parents are avid season ticket holders. Judging by the fact he turned down Barnsley, it sounds as if he was just waiting for the call. Interesting decision by Wolves owner Steve Morgan, who is said to be friends with Saunders.
Barnsley have now turned their attention to Calendonian Thistle’s Terry Butcher.

I see David Moyes showed us the way to go. A 5-1 victory at Cheltenham with a full strength side.and Everton have a better chance of league honours this year than us. I promise no more on this topic!
