Cup half empty

Whilst Powelly this morning probably told the players not to worry themselves over the abysmal performance on Saturday and concentrate on the league, many of the supporters, and not surprisingly those that paid good money to sit through it, can’t seem to shake it from their memories.

Dave took to his loft to find out exactly how rubbish our Cup form was and he did. He wrote that in 66 seasons, we have failed to win an FA Cup match in 34 of them! In fact by my own calculations we won a quarter of as many FA Cup matches in two seasons – 1945/46 and 1946/47 than we did in the next 66.

As Dave points out, since we lifted the famous Cup in 1947 Charlton have had only four Cup runs, namely in 1981 (lost to then old Div 1 leaders Ipswich), 1994 (went out to then Premier League leader Manchester United), in 2000 (lost to Bolton Wanderers) and in 2006 (went out Middlesborough). Truly shocking.

Call for Clarke

With Ricardo Fuller out for an undetermined amount of time, the name of Leon Clarke has been floated again amongst Addicks. Mind you it is probably the first time the names of Fuller and Clarke have been mentioned in the same sentence.

Clarke has scored close to 20 goals on loan at Chesterfield, Swindon and Scunthorpe in about a year but Swindon fans yesterday made it clear their feelings to their ex-player who returned to the County Ground for the first time and during his stay in SE7 Addicks were none too impressed either.

N’Guessan joins on loan

A new loan player joined the promotion push at Sparrows Lane this morning. With Danny Haynes injured and Leon Clarke unceremoniously packed off to Crawley on Friday night, there wasn’t a striker on the bench on Saturday, although Adebayo Azeez did travel with the squad.

Paul Hayes scored another goal for loan club Wycombe on Saturday, and can return later this week and Jason Euell is back at Sparrows, but it is unclear to his future.

Clarke’s a shoe in

I’m very pleased with Chris Powell’s early January transfer business. I wish Paul Benson all the best at Swindon where he will be reunited with his old car-pooling mate Alan McCormack, but even a blind man could see that he wasn’t in the manager’s plans. Meanwhile replacing him with the division’s 4th top scorer is a clever bit of business in my book.

Clarke will not be the last person to fall out with Paulo Di Canio, and has all the DNA of a Powell signing. A player with age on his side who has impressed at this level, could play higher and has something to prove. Welcome Leon.
