Deadline deals
So we only added one new player to the 17 we had already signed. I lay in bed last night counting new signings and not sheep as I tried to get to sleep. Go on, try it tonight and try to picture them as well. It’s not easy.
Apart from Neil Warnock, Tony Pulis and Arsene Wenger, I’ve been looking around our division to see who else was busy on transfer deadline day.
Late last night Sheffield United agreed to sell exciting striker Jordan Slew to Blackburn for £1m and Daniel Bogdanovic went to Blackpool for an undisclosed fee. They did manage to keep Stephen Quinn but the Blades approach this weekend’s game with Bury not knowing if the paperwork was done in time for the incoming loans of Rangers midfield duo Kyle Hutton and John Fleck. Talking of Bury, Ryan Lowe is going to be hard to replace, but the Shakers did sign Northampton’s Shaun Harrod, who has never played above League Two plus they captured midfielders Shane Byrne and Giles Coke on loan from Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday respectively.
Wednesday made the biggest deal on deadline day finalising the £500,000 signing of Ryan Lowe. He is expected to make his debut against us on Monday after playing for Bury last week against us. Megson also signed Slovenian centre-back David Kasnik on loan from Olimpija Ljubljana.
MK were busy signing the impressive left-sided midielder Anthony McNamee on a free transfer from Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday defender Mark Beevers in a loan deal until 31 December.
Colchester signed Watford defender Tom Aldred, Oldham picked up free agent Shefki Kuqi, who apparently we cast our eyes over and Powell took a pass, Rochdale signed striker David Ball on loan from Peterborough United and Ahmed Benali on a season-long loan from Premier League club Manchester City. The 19-year-old midfielder came through the ranks at the Etihad Stadium and has worked with boss Steve Eyre in his former role as youth team coach at City.
Preston have signed Jamaica winger Keammar Daley from Tivoli Gardens, subject to receiving a visa, Scunny signed French midfielder Damien Mozika from Bury and took Everton reserve defender Shane Duffy on a one-month loan.
Bournemouth sold yet another player in tricky winger Liam Feeney (who impressed me at The Valley) to Millwall for an undisclosed fee. The Cherries failed in the bid to bring in Paul Benson. They were one of four clubs who agreed a fee for the Addicks striker.
Huddersfield were quiet. They held onto Jordan Rhodes, who was rumoured to be moving yesterday. The Terriers teenage winger Aiden Chippendale did join Inverness Caledonian Thistle on loan. Stevenage made an interesting signing in striker Don Cowan from Irish First Division side Longford Town for an undisclosed fee. Cowan is 21 and didn’t make it at Shamrock Rovers and has been at Irish 2nd tier side Longford for two seasons.
Chesterfield finally received international clearance for French winger Alex Mendy, struggling Orient somewhat surprisingly sold Alex Revell, who hit 16 goals last season, to Rotherham. Notts County were in for quite a few players including Barnet winger Mark Marshall but the only new face is Defender Claude Davis, who is on trial after leaving Crystal Palace.
The ’emergency’ loan market (I have no idea why they still persist with the word ’emergency’) opens in a week and expect a lot of League One comings and goings.
