Robbie at the rescue
Barnet 0 Charlton Athletic 0
The radio gave the impression that this was a cracking cup tie and perhaps for the neutral it was. Playing down the slope in the first period we should have led, but after Tuesday night we reverted back to type and dominated the first half but never looked like getting the ball in the old onion bag.
In the 2nd half it was pretty even but we appeared to have the upper hand until the last 15 minutes when Barnet turned the screws and frankly we were lucky to escape with a draw and our pride intact. Robbie Elliot performed heroics in goal allowing us to avoid last season’s shocker and get our name in the hat for today’s 2nd Round draw.
Addicks’ fans made up half of the crowd and I think it’s fair to say though that the radio commentary team talked more highly of the game than the travelling Charlton fans. Parky surprisingly put out an unchanged team, which I suspect will not be the case on Tuesday in the JPT.
Elsewhere Brighton were surprisingly held at home to Woking, Bristol Rovers, Oldham and Exeter each lost as did Rochdale in front of the cameras on Friday night. Vauxhall Motors grabbed a replay at Hartlepool whilst Bournemouth, Wednesday and Colchester all won exciting games. Carlisle packed Midland Football Alliance side Tipton Town off with a flea in their ear, Daggers and Orient drew in the East London derby, Southampton left it late to beat Shrewsbury at St Mary’s and Swindon regained some pride thrashing Plymouth 4-0 in the west country.
The replay will be at The Valley a week on Tuesday and the club have announced that only the west lower and east stands will be open for home fans. In today’s draw we were given a home tie against either Luton Town or Conference North side Corby Town.
