Ronnie, Ronnie Moore

There’s a lot to like Hartlepool United for. First of all their manager is Ronnie Moore.

Moore was a Rotherham legend in the 80’s, signed by Lennie Lawrence when we didn’t have a bean, with the fan’s contributing the bulk of the money. Somewhere in my parents loft is a certificate proclaiming that my £1 donation helped buy him.

Moore sacked by Tranmere Rovers last season due to illegal betting – he won £3.93 on an accumulator – took over at dead and buried Hartlepool United in December. Pool were 10 points adrift of safety in March with the Conference staring them in the face for the first time in their 94-year history.

Job done

Charlton Athletic 1 Barnet 0
I’ll keep this short as I’m as hungover at hell.

Terrific defensive performance last night against 92nd placed Barnet as we march on to Wembley. Job done, clean sheet, momentum continued.

I was out and have no idea what really happened, but these people do: New York Addick; Hungry Ted; Drinking During the Game; Addicks Diary; Charlton Casual; Stickleback; Doctor Kish.
CA fact: Barnet have conceded 38 goals so far this season – the 2nd worse (behind Peterborough) in the lower two divisions.

Robbie at the rescue

Barnet 0 Charlton Athletic 0
The radio gave the impression that this was a cracking cup tie and perhaps for the neutral it was. Playing down the slope in the first period we should have led, but after Tuesday night we reverted back to type and dominated the first half but never looked like getting the ball in the old onion bag.

In the 2nd half it was pretty even but we appeared to have the upper hand until the last 15 minutes when Barnet turned the screws and frankly we were lucky to escape with a draw and our pride intact. Robbie Elliot performed heroics in goal allowing us to avoid last season’s shocker and get our name in the hat for today’s 2nd Round draw.

Barnet where

Did you know there isn’t actually a place called Barnet. There is Chipping Barnet, High Barnet, New Barnet, East Barnet, Barnet Hill and Friern Barnet but no actual Barnet.

I visited Underhill in 1995 and it was truly crappy and I haven’t read anywhere about multi-millions of investment since either on the 100-year old ground. Yet it will give many of the 1,200 Addicks a chance to stand on a terrace behind a goal which is not to be sniffed at.

The Bees have been in the Football League second time around since 2006 but to be honest it hasn’t been anywhere near as much fun as the early 1990’s when Barry Fry and Stan Flashman were falling out on a daily basis.

All we can hope for tomorrow is that we avoid the absolute embarrassment of a year ago. That day Parky played a strong side, which I am sure he remembers. Akpo, Abbott, Fortune, Solly, McCormack all need games and the game should be used to give Reid a run out at some point too.

To all of those Addicks starting in EN5 on the Road to Wembley tomorrow, enjoy the day.

Barnet fair

For all of the temptation of an Ebbsfleet United or a Dover Athletic or even a FC United of Manchester, I was far happier with Barnet away in today’s FA Cup 1st Round draw.

We have only played the Bees four times, never in the league but we have met them a couple of times in recent pre-season’s. I was at our only competitive game at Underhill in 1995. It was a truly dreadful game, on a dreadful pitch. I think the crowd was around 1,750 and we must have had around 500. I expect there to be double the crowd on November 6th.
