Bring home the Racon

Charlton Athletic 1 Dagenham & Redbridge 0
I was at London Bridge around 5ish last night and I lingered long over the departures board toying with the idea of jumping on a train to SE7 to get my first glimpse of us this season. In the end the fact that getting back to my parents after the game would have been a probable no-no and also that I wanted to spend my last night with my son together, I grabbed a cornish pasty and a coffee and jumped on the train to East Croydon with the other cattle instead.

Sky Sports News was more interested in the last remnants of a dull transfer deadline day than what was happening around the country in the JPT, although we did get a report after about an hour on Therry Racon’s goal and @CAFCofficial did it’s normal top-class job on Twitter.

The league is more important, of course but a cup victory is a rare and welcome occurrence whatever the competiton and 4, 630 believers came out to watch, which was a very credible turnout.

After the hat-trick of signings the day before the rumour doing the rounds on Tuesday was of a familiar deadline sale. That of Therry Racon to Greek side Panionios. Sky were reporting that him and his agent were lunching on calamari in the coastal town of Nea Smyrni. Well obviously not because when Racon stroked the ball home on 57 minutes he was clearly thinking of his pregnant wife at home in Blackheath as he stuffed the ball up his shirt.

Racon remains our biggest enigma but his transfer would have undone some good construction work on the squad the day before by Parky and I’m glad to see him stay and be given a (probable) last chance to prove himself with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

CA fact: Anyone with a programme might have a collectors item on their hands with one of the listed opposition players actually running out of the tunnel for us.
