West Ham United 1 Charlton Athletic 2

I was a shaking, blithering wreck at the final whistle. I looked up and the girls had left me to it and gone out and the dog was cowered in the corner.

A fantastic day for all Addicks and especially those at the game in a record Championship attendance.

A brilliant win, and we deserved that large slice of rare luck when their penalty hit the outside of the post in the 93rd minute.

In team news Okonkwo made his debut, Mannion wasn’t on the bench but apparently had a knock. So too did Godden, so Leaburn started and Mbick was on the bench.

The game started pretty even and I thought we did not look overawed and won an early corner. The next set play we won saw a long throw from Carey not dealt with by the West Ham defence, and Lloyd Jones brought the ball down and dispatched an overhead kick into the corner of the net.

Lloyd, where an earth did that come from? What a start with 9 minutes on the London Stadium clock.

Following that the game continued in the same vein with Charlton defensively solid and we kept the ball well and were having the best of the chances. Grant particularly in this period was excellent. His intelligence and experience showing whenever he got the ball.

Leaburn had a good shot that hit the goal stanchion and then Carey should have released him on a counter but chose the wrong option.

Our four attacking players were proving a real handful and it wasn’t until the minute of added time that West Ham had their first real opportunity – a header straight at Okonkwo.

Importantly I thought we began the second period positively, keeping in good shape and pressing well.

With the Hammers starting to up the tempo we broke again, but Mavropanos picked up ball only to be dispossessed by Leaburn. He fed TC who headed to the edge of the area and fired across Hermansen into the far corner. TC’s smile was a wide as the Blackwell Tunnel and Addicks celebrated wildly behind the goal. Wow.

At this point there looked a few tired bodies, and Jones put Mwamba on for Carey, although the whole process took longer than 10 seconds and we were down to 10 men for a minute or so.

That new rule went against us, but I have to say these little changes like the countdown for a goal kick does make the game flow better.

Leaburn’s game was done, and what a game he had had. Mbick replaced him. Two 19-year old’s now on the pitch.

Okonkwo played with a real calmness and his quick use of the ball was something I really liked. Yet with 15 minutes left he could only push out a shot for Piroe to put in and West Ham were back in it.

If Okonkwo could be criticised for the goal, he then kept us in it saving brilliantly from Mukasa. Taty then got booked for the most theatrical dive ever. I think he was trying to find the high jump mat at the Olympic stadium.

Jones went five at the back and in all honesty I thought we looked pretty solid as time moved on, and when 4 minutes was added, I was shocked it wasn’t more.

In looking back at the penalty I think it was the right decision, but it would have been a travesty however Taty added to the long list of stuttering run-up penalties during and since the World Cup that did not ripple the net.

I lost all sense of myself at that point and just stared at the screen gibbering to myself as the final whistle blew.

Tough to pick a MoM. So many excellent performances. What a great day.

🎙️ “It’s a magnificent win. How organised we were, how solid we were, how we were on the counter. We could have been a bit more fluid and had a bit more possession. But you have to remember recent history, where we have come from and where they were, this is categorically the best squad in the Championship.” — Nathan Jones

I loved every minute of the application and desire. I giving MOTM to McNamara , closely followed by TC, Leaburn and Bell. I am enjoying seeing Grant again who looks comfortable at this level.

TBF – we shouldn’t get carried away because we will face far tougher tests during the season!!🤣🤣 COYA

You will enjoy walking around town this weekend, won’t you mate.

I thought McNamara was excellent. Can tell he has played a lot of games at this level. Loved also that he got in Taty’s ear after the penalty.

Too right C.A. !! I think The Valley faithful should stand as one next week for a rendition of “we’re proud of you Charlton” because that sums up how I feel at this very moment, that and a little bit smug!!!😏 🤣

Unbelievable what a shift all the players put in today I did write this game of as probably a 2-0 defeat to be honest
I’m hoping the new keeper Arthur will sign a permanent deal next season the way he controlled the box today yes he did palm it out to the West Ham player but the goal area was packed so not a big mistake
And on to TC last seasons marmite player to 2 fantastic goals that any premier league striker would be proud of
Lloyd jones thank god he has signed a new contract he’s up there with the Matt Holland Johnny Jackson I’ll run my socks off for this club award
Great team effort today I’m not going to get to carried away just yet but we look good and I’m actually quite glad the play off places have been extended to 8
A long way to go and I would have been happy with a top 10 finish this season but I’m going to say I just hope NJ keeps with his tactics and doesn’t go to hoof ball because the way we play we are going to be a difficult opponent for any team

Brilliant all round performance, and all in West Ham’s backyard. I had written off any points from this afternoons game, so for us to come away with all three was gargantuan. I don’t think any of the team, including the subs, had a bad game.
I have been quick to criticise TC in the past, but he has had three stand out games so far. Hopefully he has now jumped that gap from League One to the Championship, and I will be happy to give him credit where it’s due.
The cup game against Spurs is now a midweek distraction, but if everyone comes through that without injury, that will do for me. COYR.

I’ve not seen this level of confidence going forward and hustle getting back from TC before.

That was an absolute pleasure to watch and we deserved the result with our counter-attacking performance. NJ got the set up right, and he has a team that appears believes in him.
There were many MOM performances, but I am going for TC. I was critical of him last season and therefore happy to praise him when he does well. He seems much happier in himself and there could be many reasons for that. At this level consistency is key, and if he continues to put a majority of good performances in, we will have one hell of player. I hope he signs a new contract very soon, because his stock value will rise significantly with performances like these. Across the pitch we were magnificent, and the central midfield is really clicking into a good partnership. You have to known your partner position and dovetail with each other. Chalobah seems to be bringing out the best of Coventry , long may that continue. Adding championship experienced players has been key, and that was on shown constantly. So a great start to the season, not getting carried away, as I am sure there will be a few dark days ahead, but lets enjoy these wins, because if you can’t then you are supporting the sport. I will interested to see if Doherty makes the squad on Wednesday with Kanu. If not then I think they will be going. So a bit of business to conclude by the end of the month. Great to Mbick back and boy has he bulked out. His match fitness will improve and he could be a real asset in the forward line. It feels like a ‘free hit’ on Wednesday and for one am looking forward to it. Let’s all enjoy these moments together COYR!

Well I didn’t have Lloyd Jones scoring with an overhead kick on my bingo card…

I’m pleased with the new formation, again it worked and it shows how well we recruited well to fit it, kudos to Nj and the team there. We’ve got more of a cutting edge, that’s the third match running (including the league cup game) where we’ve scored two or more goals. One feature of last season was the number of times we only managed one goal and then dropped points as a consequence.

We’ve got a stretch coming up with mid-week games so things might start getting trickier, but points on the board this early in the season makes things so much easier.

The squad also looks happy – I caught a video mid-week on YouTube and the players look relaxed and seemed to be enjoying themselves. One thing Curbs always talks about was getting the right players in to fit the Charlton ethos and NJ seems to have done that too. It’s clear from the three matches that they are working well with and for each other.

That was just glorious. A win to remember. We are starting to look like a Championship side with the blend of experience and homegrown players who have benefitted from game time in L1 and from last seasons struggle.
So positive that we are scoring and then pushing for more rather than clinging on in defence.
Wednesday we should rotate a bit – we might even see Apter.

What a game and top performance from all the Charlton players and boy oh boy I’m so happy, especially as some of my West Ham friends said we’d be hammered!!! (Excuse the pun)
I’m not going to get carried away as I still feel we will be under pressure as games go on.
Take a bow Nathan, coaching staff, players and medics we can be very proud of the performance and result.
I’ve never seen Curtis Flemming celebrate the goals and result with so much enthusiasm 😀

What a great day !! Well i thought Taty was a half decent player until his ‘dive’ exposed him for what he really is. Expect he will get a few kickings as a result expecially from the Millwall boys and probably a few others too ……

Was tough sitting on my hands in the home end. But this Cockney with stomach full of Pie nMash from Maureen’s, a few pints in the Bow Bells pub was proud as punch. Danny Mac what a steal. But what immense team effort. I can whole heartedly say I’m eating my words on TC & long may it continue.UTA

Left a few comments on a west ham website…welcoming them to the championship and its not all about spending big and sacking the manager after 2 games is madness…also pointed out how well Charlton played as a unit and deserved the points!! Being nothing was said about us !! I don’t think 🤔 comments went down well !!…

Our starting XI cost a wopping £1.5M, the rest frees, loans, academy…so much to be proud of. Proper club, proper manager, proper fans.
Also in the home area with my lad, was tough them last 10 mins with no shared anxiety to feed off but what a day.
Taty missed the ball once he’d decided he was taking and not the club captain, retribution for that lot will
be a gift that keeps on giving.
