Interested to see Patrick Casey being offered a new pro deal.
The club released their academy squad update today with Toby Bower, Ollie Hobden, Paris Lock, Lennon MacLorg and Tommy Reid being the most high profile leavers.
Casey has struggled a bit with injuries and missed the end of Dorking Wanderers season, who drifted from title chasers into the play-off’s where they lost to Torquay in the semi-finals.
Casey had a spell where he scored 8 times in 11 games. He was prolific in the Addicks youth teams and at 20 years old the club may feel he is ready for a loan to the National League.
I can’t see a scenario where he makes it at our level, but I suspect the club feel has potential value.
Capped at youth level by the Republic of Ireland, Casey has one League game appearance to his name. He was a late sub at The Valley in a L1 defeat to Oxford in January 2024.
His problem at Charlton is that he’s going to be competing with Micah Mbick and Daniel Kanu who have more experience in actual league football, both had good seasons for Colchester and Walsall and look ready for the next step up while he was playing a couple of divisions below them. Even then we are carrying TC and Miles Leaburn and training up Charlie Kelman. He’s got to get past a lot of players to even get on the bench next season while playing at Academy level isn’t going to teach him much.
I can though see him coming good in a few seasons time – not every player is first team ready at 20.
Maybe we’ve offered him a contract knowing that he’s going to move on so we can then negotiate a share of the profit if his career takes off in a year or two?
I ve always thought this young man was a natural goal scorer at the age of 20 he should’ve been given a chance to show his credentials footballers tend to retire at the age of 35 so give this lad a chance NJ after all didn’t wayne rooney and paul Konchesky play at 15 in the premier league also like I’ve been saying likewise for Daniel Kanu was nt he scoring for us while in league 1 look what he did for Walsall last season give him a chance you never know unless we try
