Charlton Athletic 2 Hull City 1

I’ll say it again. Phew.

Fantastic to win today to secure our Championship status after our first year up. Two wonderful goals allowed us all to let out massive sense of relief.

I set my alarm for 6am for a 6.30am kick off New Orleans time, but I was happy to get the game started after a couple of long days of apprehension.

The team started bright even though nerves were abundent, but there looked a real intensity about them. Again I liked the way we were set up.

Sichenje was booked early worryingly, but was later forced off with an injury.

Kelman was lively, but in the 21st minute he scored an absolute treasure of a goal. Fending off a couple of challenges, he worked his way to the edge of the box and let fly with a beautiful shot that curled into the top corner. To score first was vital.

Hull were limited to some dangerous corners, and in the 7th minute of injury time, they scored from one. VAR would’ve given a foul, but I have no time for players in those sort of situations going to ground as Kaminski did. Typically we had given them the corner from a poor pass to begin with. Clarke being the offender.

Half time was more subdued than it should’ve been including in my hotel room.

I thought Hull had their tails up in the 2nd half, but Fevrier was leading our threats. One cross from him just eluded Knibbs toe in front of goal.

I felt we were sitting deeper encouraging Hull onto us, and on about the hour Campbell and Chambers replaced an ineffectual Carey and a knackered looking Knibbs.

Then out of nothing Fevrier picked the ball up out on the right, danced around a couple of tackles and unleashed a lovely left foot shot that burrowed into the net in front of a frenzied Covered End. It was a great goal, and I made sure the rest of my hotel floor knew it!

After that it was about managing the game, and Hull looked out of ideas, a couple of set pieces aside.

The final minutes were almost enjoyable and it would have been lovely to see us get a third when Fevrier stormed forward from their corner which their ‘keeper was up for. But we had to settle for two, the first time we had scored more than one at home since October, and we are safe and will play Championship football again next season.

🎙️ “We were coming into a monster of a league, where we have come from in such a short space of time, to be competing is firstly an achievement. To be as competitive, front-footed and aggressive as we have, has been another achievement. To go through the season, we have had injuries, we have been really under the cosh at times, but six points above the relegation zone is the worse we have been. I think it is the most wonderful achievement and I am so proud.” – Nathan Jones

⭐️ Jayden Fevrier

🏟️ 20,671 (2,783 from Hull)

Special day and over the course of the season well deserved.
Bit of a ragtag bunch at times, predominantly L1 standard, which makes the collective achievement all the more outstanding.
More relief than celebration but wither way job done, in style or not don’t really matter.
Great to see the owners on the pitch enjoying the moment, the unity between them, the management and players was plain to see. And that’s the only way we’ll continue to succeed, unified.
The vibe these past couple of years has been so positive and joyful, 2019 was special but we were still hamstrung with a disengaged owner. This feels different but it’ll take more than a poultry £10M spread across a bunch of L1 punts to push us on…let’s see.
Have a great summer CA, your missives most appreciated.

Delighted we managed to save our season today. I was absolutely dreading having to go to Swansea looking for a point. Or worse hoping Millwall got at least a draw against Oxford on the last day.

I would have been doubly fearful after Oxfords result today.

So it will be Championship football again next season.
Right now it’s time to celebrate and not moan. We all know a major reconstruction of the team is required if we are to have a better season than this one.

Job done. Congratulations to the players, coaching staff, owners, and backroom staff, not forgetting Elsie the tea woman!!!! …It was pleasing that in the end, we didn’t need help from Oxford or Millwall to keep us up.
Congratulations also to us supporters, especially those who travelled hundreds of miles throughout the season on the away days. Your support was exceptional.
It has always been a roller coaster being an Addick and this season was no different.
We have had up’s and down’s throughout the season, most of which have been discussed and disected on here.
Over the years, us Addicks have had several good times, but they are few and far between…….today is another ‘good time’.
During the summer we can all bask in the knowledge that we will be a Championship club again next season.
I can’t wait for the transfer window to open !!!! COME ON YOU REDS

Yes, a great result and what we all wanted. However, we can’t be the same next season. Squad needs a massive overhaul but that’s a discussion to be had at another time

Like many others, I can now relax. Eastand and others are right that we need a proper overhaul and that now is not the time to go into it. I am just overjoyed that we now have at least one more season out of League 1.
I shall sleep well tonight for the first time in months!

Well done yesterday and we showed that we can hold our own in this league….we can all now relax and digest the fact we will be in this league again.
It’s been a real roller-coaster ride with more downs than ups but we did it in front of a bouncing Valley.
We need a real sort out of players in the close season and new blood brought it to build on progress.
What a stunning goals from Kelman and Fevrier…!!!!
Thanks for all your brilliant posts CA and keep up the excellent work next exciting season 😀

Well that was unexpected decent result but unexpected it was a shame fevrier didn’t get his second goal that run at the end was like kevin lisbies at anfield in early 2000s. What a goal by kelman that’s exactly why we paid £5m.watched the match when I got home as I was at the Norwich v Swansea match with my son if we play that well against them I feel we could get a win onwards and upwards for the last game congratulations to everybody involved championship football again next year. What a contrast of emotions this club manages to put us through, in such a short space of time!

I had spent much of the week fearing the worst (apprehension is the perfect word), that it would go down to the last day, hoping for some fluke of a goal to get us over the line, and instead we score two absolute belters! The sense of relief and elation that I felt after yesterdays game is almost comparable to my mood after last seasons Play-off final!

Lloyd Jones POTY, never in doubt.

Whatever we say about NJ, he hasn’t let us down us our manager. He dragged us out of League One (where many others had failed), and now, against all the odds, we are staying up in the Championship for another season. Onwards and upwards…

    Come on you Reds!!!

At least 5+ better players and we could finish outside the relegation zone next season.
2 or 3 better players will not be enough.
In the next couple of months we will find out if we are a club pushing up or a club trying to hang on.

Like most I was apprehensive, kept thinking of previous years when we got in the Championship, but failed to stay up.

Kelman’s goal was an absolute belter, had me running round all over the place and feeling much more hopeful.

Fevrier was a revelation and what a cracking goal and nearly got two, which maybe he should have passed inside to others. He reminds me of Chucks physically and amazed at how he went from one end to the other. I did get a get a bit worried when we started dropping back, especially the corners, but we held on and started playing again. Our supporters were fantastic and a special thanks to those that also support us away. Last but not least, thanks CA for all your comments throughout the season. COYR’s

Yep, if Thomas Kaminski had stayed on his feet that would have been a routine, no dramas save. One bit of play-acting cost us a goal from nothing and gave Hull an undeserved route back into the match.

This season we’ve worked hard as a team but we’ve also shot ourselves in the foot by leaving too many points on the pitch and we haven’t scored anywhere near enough goals but survival was the objective and we made it.

However we mustn’t be like other teams that seeking hanging on , scraping for points and survival while hoping that there will be three worse teams, that’s not a viable strategy.

So let’s have a good off-season with recruitment and try and plug some of the obvious gaps – a lack of creativity in midfield, a goalscorer who can get into double figures and some squad depth plus some genuine Championship tried and tested quality. Attendances have been much higher than last season – about 5k more and we’ve been on TV a fair bit so I hope that the owners can see the value in giving NJ a higher budget to work with.

Build it and he will come…

I agree with just about everything other supporters have said. I do agree the keeper should never have sat down for their goal. If he kept to his feet the ball would have gone down his throat. We need a far better keeper than we have now.
