Tyreece Campbell

There hasn’t been an Addicks player that splits opinion for a number of years like Tyreece Campbell does.

Campbell has been at the club since he was 9 and made his debut just over 4 years ago. He tops the appearance list comfortably within the current squad and as we know is favoured by manager Nathan Jones and has featured in every league game this season thus far.

Academy players don’t always get the love they should at Charlton I feel, and TC falls into that mixed point of view category despite the popular song that rains down from the Covered End.

Shy, very shy, TC plays with a mix of electric pace and strength or sometimes disdain and look of can’t be bothered. Often in the same passage of play.

Jones known for not just looking at the stats when evaluating his players, rightly feels that TC is probably the only player in his squad that can take us up the field with pace and ingenuity. Also, we’ve seen it, just not enough, he is capable of some magic.

Despite all of our ‘expert opinion’ of players, we don’t see what happens at Sparrows Lane during the week, and TC racks up a lot of Km during games as I’m sure he does at Sparrows Lane. He should also be commended for agreeing to play a big chunk of this season as a left wing back. He has looked horribly out of place there, not helped by his frequent lapses in concentration, but someone had to do it, and there weren’t many takers.

That certainly has impacted his numbers, which sits at 3 goals and 3 assists, and I feel that is an area he will have to improve on if he’s going to make it as a top-level Championship player. That and his decision making, which sometimes lifts your arse of your seat in excitement and other times, maybe moreso, has your head in your hands.

Nonetheless he is always the Charlton player other team’s gang up on – which really helped Godden last season – and also the player other team’s supporters single out as our most dangerous. Like it or not he is also a player we could also sell for a fair few bob. There was interest in him last summer and although his contract expires this summer, the club will undoubtedly pull the trigger on the year’s extension.

I have to be honest, he drives me mad, yet I value that he is one of our own, and also does have the ability to put opposition defenders on their backsides, and fire an unlikely goal into the corner of the net. Yes, just not enough.

Now TC needs a rest. Lacking in confidence, and for sure the player that has the most relentless running stats, I’d like to see Kelman partner Dykes over the next few games and have TC on late in games, and be the game-changer.

He needs to show more effort,we have got where we are by effort,to me he does not look at times interested. Yes he has the dribbling ability which we need (bring back Raki Saki or Lennie Glover) but loses it too easily
To see out the season we need player to give maximum effort

TC has always been better coming on in the 60th or 70th min I am a great admirer of tyreece he is so physical and energetic and when on top form (which isn’t as often as we would like) about 1 in every 5 games he can run rings round many a defender. I would like to see Kelman and Dyke start then bring on TC behind the left striker in the 60th min next to Carey. Tc does need to kerp pressing if he wants to go forward with our club but I doubt NJ will drop him for some reason .

Loses the ball too easily, makes the wrong decision most of the time, is timid in the tackle, gives away too many needless fouls and is just not Championship material. Get shot if an offer is made.

Totally agree, he cannot start games, he does nothing and is more of a liability when starting, not strong enough to hold ball up, shies away from tackles, maybe he can be an impact sub (big maybe), but currently, if any offer comes in sell him, in fact will drive him to the other club myself.

As you know I’m no fan of NJ. Among the reasons for that is his persistence In playing TC. Who is frustratingly poor. Should never start a game and should only be used for the last ten minutes or so. As that’s about the maximum time he produces anything resembling effort.

I am definitely on the anti TC side. Everyone says has electric pace but compared to a lot of Championship wingers he does not. Indeed when any half decent full back is against him they have him in their pocket. Decision making poor. Enthusiasm / Effort poor. You hardly ever see him busting a gut to get back and help out the defence. In fact if you go through this season’s games you can find lots of instances when the opposition have scored and he is just jogging behind them not interested in helping out. I have a lot of time for NJ ( best since Curbs ) but I just don’t know what he sees of him on match days…it’s like he is watching a different game to me. Let’s face it going forward is not our forte and he certainly doesn’t help dissuade me from that thought. A must to sell on in the summer for me

Whilst he’s definitely not a LWB, neither do I see him as a striker. He’s a winger in a 4-3-3 or similar, so if NJ prefers 2 up top, not sure how he fits in. Useful option to have from the bench.

TC reflects the unpredictable displays by many of the squad in recent months….to be honest he looks knackered and fed up, similar to Leaburn before Christmas….I have feeling that TC does not agree with what Jones wants him to do in games and his demour is evident.
On a completely different tack…..I see Dykes has been called up to join the Scottish squad….great for him but I can see him now playing in a way to avoid any injury…..hope I’m wrong but call me a cynic if you want.

I agree TC looks pretty tired in recent games I don’t think he’s a wing back or a striker he’s a out and out winger and would probably enjoy his football better played his natural position,he does drive everyone mad but so do a few more player’s in the squad. rest him used him from the bench until the end of the season and play kelman coyr

Whilst I can understand the debate that surrounds TC, it is easy to overlook the fact that he is still young and he has stepped up to a level that is even less forgiving than League One. Has he looked completely out of his depth, no. I think that TC has something that no other player in the squad has, and I think that NJ sees him as a rough diamond, and a project, that if he gets it right, will be a great player and worth a lot to this club.

Personally, I have more doubts about Leaburn, and his potential to kick on. With his size and height he should be bullying defenders at this level, but we have only seen this happen sporadically. I thought that this was going to be a big season for him, especially if he had ambitions to go further, and it hasn’t quite happened for him yet.

T.C has always been in my opinion at best when he’s a 60/70 minute sub he terrifies the opposition’s tired defense’s legs !

Sadly TC has not made the jump to being a Championship player. His decision making is shocking, and no better than his defensive qualities. I realy do hate putting our home grown players down, but we are in a cut throat business where success is the only thing that matters. Three goals and three assists is not good enough for a player who has been in the matchday squad for every game this season. Apter, who was shipped out during the transfer window is a far better all round player than TC. How many assists/goals would he have accrued if playing the minutes that TC has under his belt.
It seems that TC’s level is league One. If the squad quality is added to during the summer, he may get pushed down the pecking order anyway.

I have tried so hard to support TC because he does posses many skills but the one ingredient obviously missing is that football brain , he cannot see two or three moves in front.
I did put this down to his age but afraid I am now of the opinion that this cannot be coached into him.
Also when we are clearing the lines and he is facing the goal we are defending he seems completely unaware of what is behind him and lately has given the ball away in serious situations.
To counter this I do believe in NJ judgement and it may just be its the best we`ve got at present .

I’m with you CA.. TC boils my blood at times.

I’ve lost count of how often he picks the ball up out wide on the left and then he tries to come inside on his right foot and either loses it or just runs into trouble. It seems to be his default move and opposition teams have sussed that out. Even if he does decide to go outside and take his man on, invariably his left foot cross rarely beats the first man.

Completely agree about his stint at LWB, no fault of his own that we didn’t have cover.

He is a (very) rough diamond at the moment and perhaps he was made to look better than he was by the poor standard of opposition in League One last season. I do believe that there is a player in there though and, like you, think he desperately needs a rest and a bit of a mental reset. His confidence looks shot.

TC isn’t a Championship level player at the moment and I can’t see him ever being one because as people above are saying you can’t coach football instinct / brain into someone. You have either got it or you haven’t … and he hasn’t.
GET RID if anyone wants to buy him.

Thought TC was excellent last season but he has struggled this season to be both consistent & dangerous, Championship oppo’s way better than L1 players. What annoys me most is his misplaced easy 5 yard passes that is a constant every match for him and the ball given back to the other team far too easily.

Maybe get through this season so he has a chance to look back and ask questions of himself. There’s a Championship player in him but can he find it?

NJ rates him highly just hope he can push on
