Charlton Athletic 0 Wrexham 1

We did not deserve to lose that. At all.

Our best attacking display for many weeks, but it resulted in defeat and a blank in front of goal telling the serial story of us not being clinical enough. Seminally we were just unable to create enough clear cut chances from our midfield and wide players.

One shot on goal, did not tell the full story however. We moved the ball better than we have for a while, light years from the game on Tuesday, showed a good structure and looked after the ball with far greater quality than in recent games.

Jones made five changes with Ramsey at left wing back instead of Chambers, Berry came into midfield for Docherty, Coventry took the unavailable Coady’s place and Leaburn was benched for TC.

The two notable team selections were Will Mannion making his first league appearance of the season after Kaminski was injured in training and to a surprise to most of us, a swathed up Lloyd Jones started, and played the whole 90 minutes.

One of the early notable actions was Reece Burke going down injured and having to go off. Burke was visibly upset and now faces a fourth injury lay off since signing last summer.

Our BFK joined the fray though and I have to say made another very good impression. He defends well, gets his toe on loose balls, creates time for himself and is useful on the ground. He even had a surge down the wing late on and put in a great cross. That ended with him holding his hamstring. Here’s hoping that was nothing too serious.

Back to the game and when you have a player unmarked in the box, you hope it’s Luke Berry, but after deciding to take another fateful touch a great chance to take the lead was missed. We were playing well though, Clarke was flagged for offside after putting in TC but then the biggest chance of the day fell to Clarke, who has missed a few sitters since joining. I love that he gets into these forward positions, but this was a dreadful miss with the whole goal at the mercy of the Ipswich loanee.

Sods law was that we were going to pay for that, and sure enough two minutes later out of almost nothing Rathbone superbly executes a control, and a volley into the far corner of our net from outside the box for 0-1.

We took control back off the game but we were behind at the break.

Berry didn’t return for the second period and Rankin-Costello was given an opportunity to be our much missed midfielder who can run with the ball, and it was JRC who had our first chance of the half. The attacks kept coming with Dykes leading the line well. TC then headed over from a Dykes cross. If roles were reversed you’d have felt that would’ve gone in.

Wrexham were playing on the break now, but they keep the ball well, and it’s patently clear they have better players to go with their vastly bigger budget. Ramsey throws himself in a way of a shot, Mannion makes a simple save and then the tackle of the match was from Sichenje who makes up a load of ground to block a clear Wrexham 2nd goal.

Jones threw on Leaburn and Kelman to join TC, Dykes and Carey. You couldn’t say he wasn’t going for it, but plenty of possession and hundreds of crosses could not get us the goal we deserved.

Leaburn volleyed over at the near post, Sichenje shot into the upper tier, preventing him getting the freedom of Nairobi, Dykes headed wide and just when we thought Carey would be the man again, his powerful shot was superbly saved by Okonkwo, who has foiled us before.

On a day when the results went well for us, we couldn’t make it count, but it was a very good performance, one we simply need to replicate consistently through to the very last day of the season.

✍️ “I think we had real good structure, we got wide, we got balls in the box. They had to defend really well and we created enough chances to put the game to bed. I want to praise them [Wrexham] because they’ve won a game and they’ve shown once again why they are where they are but we’ve let them off the hook today because we’ve had chances.”

Consistency is our problem. We cannot keep having poor performances. Create more chances and convert them regularly and we will be ok.

A game where it was hard to differentiate between us and Wrexham….we had them.on the ropes many times but poor finishing let them.off the hook….pity !!!
We played well and deserved at least a point but big praise to the team for a really encouraging display.
Great to chat with Dobbo before the game and sensed he really loves Charlton despite his move to Wrexham….
If we continue to approach future games like we did today we will survive !

      cliffb50 and Everyone.
I was away the weekend with no access and picked up the result at about 16:50 Sunday Thailand Time the result, and yet again favours from just about everyone else, and another weekend when we had more chances to extend the gap and this is so frustrating indeed, and this lack of taking goal-scoring chances has been there all season, but not that many.
WE have to be thankful that other results went for us, and I was expecting WBA and indeed to pick up some decent form and results, and yes, they and others will surely pick up some form.
Frankly, this lack of goal-scoring has been with us since the start of the season,
Yes, sometimes in football, one does not always get what one deserves, and certainly for most of us in real life, never ever do.

One fact has stood out, and on Sky Sports report on the game CAFC have not scored a league goal in the first half at home since 22nd November, 2205 and that is 9 league matches.

Yes, if we continue to get results like this, and yes, I get the performance levels went up yesterdaym but obviously this is not going to be enough.
Here is hoping we get that first elusive win very quickly, let alone 3 more after that to be absolutely certain,
Very sqeaky bum time for sure,

Can we please have a referee and two linesman who are able to officiate at championship level . You either get a referee who brandishes yellow cards for fun , or like today is letting fouls and time wasting go unpunished. The wrexham goalkeeper took over 3 mins to take one goalkick and where has the 6 second rule gone for goalkeepers . Agree we played some nice football today and loydd jones was immense .100 % better than wba away .keep the faith coyr .gary g

The referees are as rubbish as L1. I’m have been shocked how bad they’ve been.

As for the linesmen / assistants. What is the point. They serve absolutely no purpose.

After weeks of poor performances, we finally get a grip of a game and still end up with nothing.
I’m usually pretty annoyed with the way our games go. But tonight it’s just disappointment. We deserved to win that or at least get a point.
Sadly our goalscoring ability is still a problem.

Absolute class performance so different than that game at wba if we would have played like that on Tuesday we would have surely thrashed them. Collins is becoming a decent player we need to keep playing him lloyd Jones is just a tank, thought Carey was going to score again but alas no points today we must keep playing like that for the rest of the campaign. Maybe just a suggestion for NJ give Kelman more game time after all we only paid £5m for him. Saw an interview with NJ afterwards he looked close to tears. Next up Birmingham we need to make a noise on Saturday. COYR

I understand that Kelman is still struggling with an injury and I’d love to see him fully fit as I know he can deliver with ease.

Hoping you are right, Cliff. He hasn’t shown yet that he can deliver in my mind.

Not BFK – KFK. Kubwa FK – doesn’t scan quite so well but do-able. (Pronounced koo-bwa)
And what is going on with our hamstrings?
Anyone want to complain about lack of attacking football – but look – no points for it boys? 🤔
As for Lloyd – god love him. Same as last season at this time, him and Godden playing with injections. Not right is it?

Disappointment is probably the most accurate description of what I’m feeling. It still hurts, but it is a different kind of disappointment to the kind that I was feeling after the inept displays against Portsmouth and WBA.

Lloyd Jones must already have the POY trophy wrapped up. Moore had one sniff early on, and after that was in Jones’ back pocket. He was immense, again!

Whether Kaminski is injured or not, I think it was the right time to take him out of the firing line, as he is not inspiring the type of confidence within the team, and even less so recently, that we need from a senior player in our current situation.

Whilst we would all agree that it is never nice to see one of our own go off injured, it does raise question marks again over some of our recruitment last summer. My pal, the Luton fan, said from day one that Burke will give us half a season at best, and that is turning out to be true. With our budget being among the lowest in The Championship, can we really afford to carry these kind of players, or does the budget mean that these are the risks that we have to take?

Jones was brilliant again, wasn’t he. I do think at some time he has to rest his body.

Re Burke, he was a gamble and it hasn’t paid off, but I can’t see how anyone is surprised. I’d have thought our budget was for players that can affect games on a regular basis and make us better on and off the pitch.

There will be a proper time for an analysis, but I am honestly not sure there was an expectation that Kelman, Olaofe and Apter were signed as long term projects.

I was getting the same vibes from the Leicester match earlier in the season, a strong team performance that day too and we lose 1-0…taking chances has been our let down. We’ve missed Matty Godden but you’d expect players at this level to get shots on target and when we did their keeper pulled off a great save.

It’s a shame that Reece Burke gets injured so frequently as between those injuries he has played well. But that’s why we could afford him – other clubs presumably passed knowing he’d only play 30% of the season. We took the chance and it hasn’t paid off.

I’m impressed by Collins Sichenje, but you can also see why he’s been used sparingly since he joined. His fitness isn’t quite up to Championship standards, that’s the second time he’s pulled up late with cramp. Hopefully a strong pre-season for him this summer and we’ll see him regularly next year.

All in all a shame but if we keep playing like that we’ll pick up the points we need.

Agreed SP, but unfortunately we are a Jeckyl & Hyde team, and we don’t know which form of us will turn up on any given day.
