Cup games

A couple of bits of Addicks’ stuff that passed me by this weekend.

Firstly, what a tremendous win for our U18’s at Liverpool in the FA Youth Cup, secondly I’ve just seen that our Chelsea FA Cup game will be played at 8pm on a Saturday night.

Saturday night might still be a sanctuary for date night or a cozy up on the sofa with a takeaway, but I would think of all the ridiculous times TV companies move games to, Saturday night is not the worst.

The game will be shown on TNT Sports 1 and discovery+ in the UK, and on ESPN in USA.

Yesterday in the 3rd Round of the FA Youth Cup, Charlton were 3-0 up at Liverpool’s Academy Centre in Kirkby. The Premier League Champions did pull two goals back but were outplayed by an impressive Addicks performance especially in the 1st half when a 2-0 lead at the break could easily have been five.

Goals were scored by Jack Belton, Ellis McMillan and Bradley Tagoe.

The Addicks will travel to either Watford or Plymouth in the last 16, who meet tomorrow.

Charlton’s Women beat Watford today 3-2 in the FA Cup to advance to the 4th Round.

A good weekend all around.

When I was young and living in Plumstead, my dad won season tickets in a ‘ Give Charlton a new nickname’ competition. He was one of several who suggested the Valiants, claiming that that was what the players looked like from our usual position near the top of the main terrace. It must have been somewhere around 62/63. The following season we went to The Valley for every game that we could. We had two reserve teams that year, one in the Football Combination on Saturdays and another in the newly- formed London Mid-Week League, although the players sometimes could be the same in both competitions. Was anyone else lucky enough to be at The Valley to see the final of the mid-week league between us and Spurs with a crowd of over 20,000? As I recall, we won, with the great Brian Kinsey, a fellow former Roan School boy, putting in a memorable shift. ( Strangely enough, I think that it was on a Saturday!) The real joy, though, was getting to watch the youth teams whenever they played at The Valley.

Anyway, it was a wonderful season watching Charlton play at all levels. It is so pleasing now to know that, small club that we really are, we can still beat the big clubs when drawn against them! An omen for the 3rd round of the FA Cup perhaps?

I’m a little bit later than some of you guys. The best memory I have was winning at Blackburn. Darren Pitcher (RIP) scoring and I was at White Hart Lane in 1985 for the 3rd Round game. Good times.

Pity only 300 + watched the women’s game but I fully appreciate Sky had loads of live games on.
Charlton women play again this coming Sunday against Nottingham Forest…worth a watch.

I noticed the attendance, Cliff. Do you think they will substantially increase if we go up?

It’s a hard task CA…it seems that lots of WSL premiership teams attract fans who can’t get to mens games…I really fear it will be very difficult to increase crowds.
The pricing is excellent at The Valley and that will need to continue….fingers crossed we get promotion

If we are to go up then this has to be the year. Hopefully the owners invest to keep us up there and the base of the crowd grows incrementally

Charlton have drawn Swindon in wsl fa cup draw…looking at home fixtures that could mean 3 games in 4 days on the pitch.
I feel for the groundstaff if women’s game is played at The Valley

After decades of waiting for a decent third round draw. We get Chelsea at home.
Which is ruined by being moved to a Saturday night 8PM kick-off in January, its the worst they could have come up with. This decision has ensured I won’t be attending.
If the game goes to extra time and penalties (unlikely I know) We’d be lucky to be heading to the rail station at 10.30 and in my case lucky to be home by 11.30.
This is one game where I would have preferred a midday kick-off Saturday or Sunday.
But of course the TV comes first and the supporters a distant second.
