Stoke City 3 Charlton Athletic 0

What the hell has happened. That was brutal and the players truly let Nathan Jones down tonight.

After Saturday I was expecting an aggressive, in your face, defend at all costs start and there we were 2-0 down after five minutes, and even the most optimistic knew then that it was game over.

The opening goal was a fluke but why give him all that time to get the cross over in the first place.

Second goal was reminiscent of Saturday and was the antithesis of everything we’d been best at this season.

The third a huge cock-up by Kaminski, who looked vulnerable all night.

Confidence shot, and the runaway league leaders to come away on Saturday.

We were very poor tonight, and it is demoralizing to then know so early in a game that our sole objective is to keep the score down.

Injuries have played a huge part of course, especially at the back but I think our previous defensive solidity has masked our attacking players (including midfielders) lack of ability at this level, Carey aside.

Not picking on players as we’d be here all night but TC has been appalling these last two games, and needs to be rested.

This has literally been a few days from hell for Jones. He doesn’t escape blame and he should shoulder it, but I really feel he deserved better from his players tonight.

Deep breath.

This is however a time for cool heads and renewed support of the team and the manager as they have to stop the rot and find solutions. These times were always going to happen, this is a huge step up in qulaity, but fortunately they only started to happen a third of the season in.

There was only one goal for this season and that has not changed.

Lastly a word for the almost 1,000 Addicks up in the Potteries tonight. Brilliant, brilliant. Keep the faith.

🎙️“It’s a tough week. We have to come through these times. The fans were brilliant. They’ve travelled up there. We’ve let them down tonight. Tonight we were poor and that’s something that I’ll take on my shoulders because we can’t do that to them.” – Nathan Jones

I didn’t see the game, apart from the goals as they happened on Sky, so can’t really comment on the match as a whole. The game was lost after five minutes though,we were never going to pull back two goals, let alone three. I put Kaminski down for the first and third goals, and the defending as a whole, down for the second. Worrying times with Coventry awaiting on Saturday. Suddenly our form and points accrued earlier in the season becomes crucial. Our lack of creating goal opportunities must be attended to in the January window if we are to survive in this division. With a fully fit defence, I think we can stumble through without additions, and of course, with Sheffield Wednesday’s points deduction there is probably only two relegation places to avoid. Realistically we need another 26 or so points to avoid the drop. Maybe we must now wake up to the realism of where we are with regard to ability in this division, and throw away the rose tinted glasses.

That was painful ! clearly injuries have played a big part in our recent form but they only give clarity to the truth that some of our players are not of championship quality and although it sticks in my throat that includes Leaburn and Campbell I WOULD LOVE THEM TO PROVE ME WRONG .We have 23 points on the board after a good start and we are going through a challenging period of matches lets get through this and not forget the ultimate objective to stay in this division and build our club into a credible force once again.

Injuries aside, going forward we lack creativity and Campbell is probably wearing a bit thin with most fans at the moment probably needs a rest leaburn is looking more and more like a league one striker, watched the whole game last night and like Saturday we where never in it, I agree with CA and everyone we just need to stay up coyr

Staying in this division’ is the only thing that matters. We all knew that it was going to be tough and perhaps we all got a little carried away when sitting 5th in the table. I cannot see us picking up a point on Saturday now, but we then need to regroup as quickly as we can thereafter.

    Apprently Albert Einstein once said
“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”
I wish someone would mention it to N.Jones.
Same formation (with the wrong players)
Same idea. Defend resolutely and try to sneak a winner (whoops)
Play T.Cambell. Even though he’s hopeless.
Play M. Leaburn. Even though he looks like he doesnt want to be here.
When it all goes wrong. Don’t use the substitutes (game changers) until it’s too late. Then change formation multiple times so every one is confused.
Yes, we do have some injury problems, I understand that. But every game should be planned individually. Not just blunder on with the same old same old.
I had my doubts about NJ last season and expressed them here. My opinions were not popular. Then he rammed them down my throat by getting us promoted.
I figured I had called it wrong. But did I ??
I have never liked NJ, but liking the manager is not an important element, it’s success that counts. I never liked Alex Ferguson, but he did rather well with Man U.
So on to Coventry. I’m writing that off and hoping it’s the end of this bad run. Then Pompey at home a game we usually do well in, let’s hope that’s the case.
P.S. I think we need to recall any of our players that we can in January. I realise they may not be great at Championship level, we simply need the bodies back. Oh! and has anyone seen or heard of the ‘Scarlet Pimpernell’ sometimes called Matty Godden?

I didn’t expect any other result away on a Tuesday night to a promotion chasing Stoke. I can remember a similar night back in the day at the Victoria Ground. Credit to those who went, but it’s containment on Saturday.

Daggs 120% agree and not rocket science but Jones just does not get it does he?

Ohhhh that was a nightmare from the start….we didn’t look confident and mentally we lacked ambition, drive, ideas, cohesion and aggression from the first kick…..
I think we were still getting over Saturday and with team changes the whole approach was appalling.
Well I still think our main focus this season is to stay in this league…..ok we have lost games but it is a roller coaster of a league and anything could happen.
I’ve written my letter to Santa and hope his elves can deliver better results ASAP.

I don’t think that we are quite at panic stations yet, but the longer any bad run goes on, you do start to worry. That said, this has been a challenging set of fixtures, so I didn’t expect us to earn many points from them. The Portsmouth game is the one that I think will be tell us where we are really at!

My concern is surrounding the injury situation. I spoke to a few friends after we signed Reece Burke, who all said the same thing- Class player, but you’ll only get half a season out of him. And that is turning out to be the case, so why did we let both Mitchell’s go out on loan?

The alarm bells are also ringing around the Godden injury, as it must have been a whole lot more serious than was let on. Any significant injury will be harder to come back from, especially when you’re 34. So what kind of level will he be returning too?

Would definitely be a good thing to add some quality in the January transfer window…

As someone who went to the game.. and it was a cold night in Stoke, I have taken a bit of time to think about this game. At first I was angry with the players, who seemingly lost confidence and forgot how to press. We looked leggy and a team approaching the end of the season. The left side was always going to be an issue, Gillespie does not have the pace to be out left, but we have lost 2 left sided defenders so someone has to play out of position. The midfield lacked that bite and was not winning those second balls. Up front we looked powder puff and lacked ideas. I am not convinced Bree has recovered from his groin as his maundering runs were limited. So now reflecting, I agree with CA, the players let NJ down. 3 defeats does not make him a bad manager and if people don’t like him then sorry, but he has turned this side around and he deserves the credit for that. My concern is that apparent loss of confidence by the players. TC is now a concern, Leaburn hussled upfront but he needs more at this level, movement and anticipation being key areas for improvement. Kamiski had a poor game. Changing formats are ok and I respect the decision to try something different. I reminded myself that games like these would happen as this a tough league. Survival remains the key objective we are still in a good points position. Although run of these defeats has to stop, that seems very unlikely with Coventry running away with this league and scoring goals for fun against all.
Portsmouth will be a big game for a multitude of reasons, and we will need a result against them.
It’s not all doom and gloom .. yet. But this losing cycle has to change. NJ will look to recruit in Jan window, at least 2 maybe more. The returning loans, just not sure, Kanu is scoring in league 2, but is that good enough for the Championship??
Keep the faith and get behind the team. Our fans last night were brilliant.. sung their support, upset but realistic of we are and where we have come from. Of course that can change if results keep coming like the last 2. The ones I spoke had little expectations for the Coventry, but don’t want us to get absolute thrashing.
