Ipswich Town 0 Charlton Athletic 3
That is the most remarkable of results.
And I didn’t see any of it. In a meeting for the beginning and then in a bar with others for the bulk of the game, which at least allowed me to celebrate every goal.
So, my perspective is from reading about the match from others and trawling through some fantastic video’s.
What a game that must have been to be at – would love to hear from those that were there.
I think saying that Ipswich have had a mixed season to date is an understatement, but they have in my and most minds the best squad and manager in the league.
They put us under a lot of pressure in the 1st half, Kaminski making a brilliant save, and Akpom hit the bar but we may have had the best couple of chances once we go to grips with the game.
That 12-minute spell in the 2nd half was devastating, the kind of thing the biggest and best clubs do to teams.
The ginger genius’ goal was sublime. When was the last time we scored a goal like that?
Kelman was then denied before Gillesphey made it two. A key moment just after that was Ipswich having a goal disallowed to a late flag. The game might have turned in a different direction if that had counted.
Yet, it didn’t and with TC and Leaburn on we just upped the ante. So pleased to see Leaburn get on the scoresheet, a goal created by TC. Wonderful scenes followed.
I was happy to see Nathan Jones switch out TC for Olaofe, but TC can be such a threat from the bench.
There was still time for Ramsey to step in to make a masterful challenge to protect the clean sheet, before wild celebration’s ensued..
What a result, what a night, what a team.
🎙️“The fans were absolutely outstanding, they travelled on a difficult night, the weather was bad, a Tuesday night coming to Ipswich is not the easiest place. I thought they were wonderful and I’m just glad we could give them a performance. The rapport we have now [is great]. Be proud of yourselves because we’re in a good place as a club.” – Nathan Jones

CA I don’t think any of us saw that coming! We were really under the cosh for most of the first half and if there finishing had been any better we definately could have been a couple of goals down and Brownie said just before half time that we could expect more of that in the second half.
Just a complete change in the second half as they came out all guns blazing with everyone going up three notches. Have to say the difference it made with NJ finally starting Olafe with Kelman, as many have previously said and then bringing on Leaburn and TC, all four of them probably had their best games. As I have intimated for weeks on end, two small strikers just isn’t working, especially against big defenders, plus as much as NJ wants him to be, TC is not a main striker, he is really good winger which he showed when coming on and leaving Leaburn for the more central role. Lets now hope NJ keeps this going with the little and big striker combination and even swapping them around ie Olafe with TC and Leaburn with Kelman, if necessary.
Very hard to pick man of the match, but for some very timely defending especially in that first half with Kaminski glued to his line several times and for poping up with another goal, Gilsphey gets my vote.
Fantastic Result and thats now two strikers getting a goal, lets hope Kelman can make it three! But I never get carried away, as Hull won’t be an easy task as they are now really finding their feet with some really good wins, so an away point at this stage, would be very welcome.
This is exactly what happens when you have the likes of Campbell and Leaburn on the bench they both played really well as did all the team 👏 great game and great result to go to Portman Rd and kerp a clean sheet and score 3 is out of this world let’s kerp the momentum up for Saturdays game we are so so proud of you COYR
Pride is the word, Craig.
What a signing Sonny Carey was…on a free and yet four goals so far and none of them tap ins. He can give the ball some welly, to beat a good keeper at his near post like that needs an exocet of a shot.
We could and should have had two goals in the first half, Olaofe spinning his man running onto the edge of the area but not quite finding the bottom corner and Gillesphey somehow poked a corner over from a few yards out on half-time, so while Ipswich might rue a couple of missed chances we had two of our own.
We looked to go 3-5-2 with Olaofe more of a striker than a winger like TC, hopefully we’ll see more of Olaofe/Kelman as a starting partnership with TC using his pace off the bench.
Besides that we soaked up the pressure, were totally disciplined, organised, every player knew his job and did it.
There can be no one man of the match simply because the entire team deserve to share it.
I think full credit goes to NJ for his tactics totally outwitted his opposite number. Yes Ipswich had a lot of possession but we funnelled them wide and the shot against the bar was from outside the box. So we should give full credit to our set up and how players worked hard to implement that tactic.
Can I say that Carey has been fantastic and has stepped up to be an excellent attacking midfielder. It merits dipping into league 1 when some were questioning why we were buying league 1 players at the time.
I think you should be flexible with your attacking options and one combination does not always work against the same opposition. NJ and his team saw something against Ipswich that warranted that change. So let’s see how it goes, but Olafe definitely posed a different challenge to their defenders. Of course there will be games were it will not go well. But this is an amazing start and as ever I remain hopeful for the rest of the season.
Yes, sometimes it goes for you, but that forward change should have been changed a long time ago, and let’s hope the same on Saturday.
Well done everyone at CAFC
Superb all over the pitch. The two starting strikers were the best pairing so far this season. I like the strength of Tanto, and I thought Kelman benefited from him. Although not getting on the scoresheet himself, he looked a better player last night. The midfield to a man were excellent, and the fact we kept a clean sheet was testament to the work the defence put in. We now go on to Hull with a scalp under our belts. One point will do me there on Saturday, or am I now asking too much ??? COYR.
For 25 mins we chased shadows, barely had a kick, there was a gulf between the sides; Akpom hit the bar when perhaps should have scored and I was thinking it’s just a matter of time before we concede.
But we began to get a foothold, weathered the storm and slowly started to compete. Oloafe could have done better when clean through on goal; Carey miskicked when in a great position at the back post and Gillesphey somehow hit over the bar when it seemed easier to score. Despite all the host’s fluent play and possession we had created the better chances and had grown continually more into the game.
Second half was incredible. I might have settled for a draw at half time but we were awesome and Town completely ran out of ideas.
Superb finish by Carey for the opener. After that we dominated midfield and were first to each ball. Delightful for Gillesphey to nod in the second after the first half miss and then beyond belief a third in 12 minutes when Leaburn headed home from close range following fine work from TC (though I think the ball might have gone out of play before he crossed it).
Kelman brought out a fine save from their keeper and both Leaburn and TC could have made it four, such was our dominance as the second period wore on.
As CA also noted, Ramsey made a great goal saving tackle to preserve the clean sheet late on.
And to the travelling fans, you all made a great noise throughout.
Interesting comments around TC.
I think we have to establish that Nathan only plays with two out and out front players. TC is not a number 9 but his wing play causes havoc for the opposition and requires 2 of them to try and mark him that of course creates space as we have the extra man and while the natural number 9 will still be marked closely gives other players like Carey more opportunities.
Two out and out strikers requires the wingbacks to provide the openings and are easier for the opposition to Mark .
Personally I am happy to trust in Nathan as he seems to know what he is doing !
Last night I watched it on my phone with a slight time lapse but text coming through on time which made for a very mind blowing 15min. , seeing the score 30seconds before it happened .
We have waited a long time for this .
