Reflections

Talking Point 🗣️

The problem with these early kick off’s is that it leaves a long time for reflection. 12.30 is 7.30am here, and that’s a lot of day to wallow, sulk, or be grumpy. Just ask the missus.

Post match yesterday I felt a real sense of pride at our performance, but by the time I went to bed last night it was more disappointment.

As has often been the case in recent seasons I’ve found great solace in the communal therapy session of Charlton Live’s Sunday Show, which I listen to when I’m out walking the dog.

The show led by Louis Mendez is always a good listen, and this morning it resuscitated my belief in this team.

And disappointment is a good thing, right. We should have won yesterday’s game by all manner of metrics and it was a performance we can all take forward.

In the early week’s of a season I always look for indications and signals. Although putting points on the board early is invaluable, for me it is less about results and more about how we play, the connectivity, the patterns, being able to see intentions and possibilities in our game that is far more consequential and sets the tone for a very long season.

We played well against Watford, but have improved in each game since. There is a lot to be positive about.

We are also very aware that Nathan Jones’ teams get fitter, stronger and better as the season progresses.

So, a tough defeat to take, but a building block to take to the next game.

I agree with you CA I don’t like the 1230 kick off but then it’s all down to the real owners of the football game sky sports I’ve said for years that they need to sort out their pricing and I know you can watch it on other platforms if you want to pay and that’s fair enough not every supporter can get to the game as you might have to work
And just one thing that shocked me today I can’t believe the last time we was in the championship it was suspended because of Covid and we got relegated how mad is that I won’t mention mr Taylor

Yep, I try to put those days in room 101. Hard to imagine the empty stadiums and even those return games when you had seat 6 ft apart.

I know every fan will say it, but it those crucial final few months (we played until end of July) with no fans really affected us.

CA. agree with you and had huge trouble picking up the game and eventually 28 minutes in got it and yes it has all been said but the issues seems to be entering the 3rd season and the problem of our goal scorers and yes like last year with Godden and the one prior with May and took quite a while to get their 1st goal and yes very early days and would like to see Leaburn and Olaffe up top but the latter and others chomping at the bit to start but there again a few having to come up to speed and how long are we going to have to wait?
I agree we look extremely competitive and just that final quality up front and Jones has stated this so often.
as regards Charlton Live and at last some newer faces on the panel as the others were getting very stale and they think only their opinions count or their mates but ignore proper supporters or pathetically blocking.
QPR will be up for it next week and they have to much better and which is a worry.

I think that the Leicester game will prove to be an invaluable lesson for some of our players, and one that will hopefully leave us in good stead for the rest of the season, especially in the area of the ‘dark arts’.

We have adapted to life well in the Championship, and have shown that we will compete with whoever we are up against. There is much to be positive about…

We did play very well and created enough chances to finish off the game. My only concern is that quite often you see newly promoted team dominate games but not won them. Going back a few years but that season we got promoted to the premier league through the playoffs, I thought we dominated a lot of games but still got relegated.

Hopefully in being overly pessimistic and this was just a bad luck. Had TC’s header or Coventry’s goal gone in I wouldn’t be saying that.

Agree with your comments. I thought about the game afterwards and a point that occurred to me was that there was over ÂŁ7million of close season signings on the bench i.e Kelman, Oloafe, Knibbs and Rankin-Costello, so surely when they get integrated the prospect of scoring more goals will materialise. Leaburn should improve with match minutes after missing so many matches last season through injury. I am optimistic particularly if the defenders remain fit and free of suspensions.

I, too, was disappointed, not with our play but the result. The boys gave 105%, so no issues there. Our approach play was tidy. But I felt we lacked the killer pass to create gilt-edged chances. But if we continue playing like that, they will come. In the meantime, our younger players need time and patience to acclimatise to the demands of the Championship. A last word for the skipper who has been criticised by some in the previous two games. I felt he was much improved on Saturday.

Agree, Lea. I thought Docherty was excellent on Saturday.
