Charlton Athletic 2 Lincoln City 2
Apologies to those of you that get to games a lot more frequently than me, it was the law of sods that meant I witnessed our worst performance since December in my first game in SE7 for a fair while.
However the comeback was stirring and a point was valuable from a game we would’ve lost on most others occasions in recent years.
Jones sounds as if he’s put his hand up for an odd team selection and a first half performance that was jittery, error-strewn and certainly not the best version of ourselves.
We looked lost as an attacking threat, with Anderson the most lost of all. We badly missed the miscellany of TC and once again Lloyd Jones’ absence showed how critical he is to the team.
In fairness Jones reacted quickly bringing on Chuks at the break, and then after a complete breakdown in defence to go 0-2 down he hauled off a clearly rattled McIntyre and an ineffective Berry.
From then on it was better, much better. We had an attacking focal point in Aneke, Dixon provided some deviance and Small and Edwards played further up the pitch.
Coventry had his worst game for as long as I can remember, but he and Docherty wrestled the midfield back and we created some very good chances.
Their keeper, Wickens, was MoM. He saved expertly from Aneke before a loose ball from a corner fell to Gillesphey, who scored as if he was a career no. 9.
The crowd had stayed with them, but the decibels were turned up after that as the Covered End did their very best to suck the ball into the net.
Meanwhile Lincoln, who in all honesty should have continued to play as they had up until the 50th minute, became intent on doing everything to waste time for 40 minutes.
In years gone by players and crowd would have simply became frustrated but together there was a real determination and resolve, and we got the equalizer when Docherty smashed a superbly executed volley left footed into the net with 15 minutes remaining.
After that Wickens made a terrific safe from a Godden header that had ‘goal’ written all over it, and also saved from Gillesphey‘s free-kick, whilst Aneke had a shot just wide of the post.
It was still a point, from being 2-0 down, but we can’t afford many off days like that, but the commitment and desire not to lose was there for all to see.
A final word on the ref. After being worse than incompetent all game for both sides, he somehow felt that 5 minutes of injury time was plenty sufficient.
There were so many stoppages in the 2nd half. Three times the players went over to the touchline for some coaching following ‘fouls,’ and he himself burnt so much time following every blow of his whistle, let alone the fourth official trying to work out his substitutes board for one of the nine subs.
Add in three goals and Lincoln’s assorted efforts of wasting time, five minutes for which he blew on exactly was a joke.
🎙️“That’s a good point, in the end. We showed a lot of spirit in the last 30 minutes, no question, but before that we were a mile off. I take responsibility. The last two or three days we’ve been passive in so many decisions we’ve made and I won’t make that mistake again.” – Nathan Jones

A better option to replace TC would have been Dixon who is able to play as a winger, although played as a striker in the U21s, playing Anderson out of position just does not work. When we signed Dixon he was described as a goal scoring winger.
Our lack of creativity underlined by scoring both goals from set plays when the big lads are up. Why is Gilbert not given a chance to play? I thought he looked decent when coming on in previous games.
Thought Gilbert did alright in the few minutes yesterday. Would have more sense to push Small up top yesterday and played Watson.
there goes the top 2 places let’s see if we can finish 3rd now
Totally agree Dixon should have started especially with his speed, as Godden was just left as a lone striker up front with no support and in no way was Anderson going to replace Campbell. Anderson and Berry were the worst two players in that dreadful first half and Jones should have replaced at least Anderson, if not both after about 30 minutes as neither were contributing anything as the whole team were struggling and it desperately needed some changes earlier on!
The hard fact is that when more than one of our main players are missing, we do not really have the quality to replace them, so struggle. Lets hope Jones and Campbell are fit for the playoffs and Godden doesn’t get any injury, as currently we have no backup for him at all, as a main striker as we can’t keep relying on Gilisphey and co to fill in the gaps up front!
After dropping points here and against Peterborough we can put aside any outside hopes of a top two spot. Unfortunately our most likely opponents in the first round of the play offs is the team (aside from ourselves) is Stockport. Maybe we can sneak into third place and get Bolton or Reading.
meant to say’s is the team most in form -Stockport
Hi CA, Glad you managed to get to the game and it’s a pity you saw us under perform and conceed two early goals.
A really odd game to witness…it illustrated how much we miss TC and Jones, and it was evident from the ko.Thierry had a decent game and his speed beating defenders was tops but his shooting was erratic.
We showed our passion and determination in the second half that resulted in pulling the deficit back….and agree that keeper had a blinding game that stopped us getting 3 points.
Cambridge away will be a challenge but I confident we can win……plenty of twists to happen over the coming games.
COYRs !!!!
I thought their keeper was outstanding any chance he’s available for a small fee for us?!
I thought the same.
Let’s hope our coaching staff noticed it too!
DK would have been the best replacement for TC but he’s injured. Anderson, a central midfielder, simply looked out of place out wide and it didn’t look either as though he was confident in the role, that experiment failed. Instead I might have swapped Thierry Small to the left, played Kayne Ramsay in TS’s position and brought in Alex Mitchell to play in Ramsay’s right-sided CB position, but that means lots of changes/disruption. I can see why NJ just went for a simple change instead.
Asking Kaheim Dixon to start there would have been a bigger mistake – he’s not ready to start league games yet.
Automatic promotion was always a tough ask – we are paying now for that run of poor form before Christmas, that is where the autos were really lost.
A couple of weeks ago we gave Tennai Watson back to back starts and he performed in the first to rave reviews and then made a couple of mistakes in the second, we saw the same with Tom McIntyre – brilliant on Tuesday a bit less so five days later. It’s these squad players who might well make the difference, bringing them off the bench to start games can be a lottery but they need to keep their match fitness up.
I took some (justifiable) criticism on this blog for my scathing assesment of Nathan Jones, prior to December’s remarkable transformation.
Since then I’ve largely kept quiet and accepted things are well and truly on the up.
Sadly yesterday once again highlighted our problems. The squad is too small and at times not good enough. Incredibly Nathan Jones reverted to the pre-Christmas version of our manager. Wrong player selection and a hit and hope playing system. We were fortunate to get a point from that game.
Second place is impossible but the play-offs look assured. What worries me is whether NJ and the team can take the pressure of them. When we’re good, we’re good. when we’re bad we’re bad.
Naturally I would love us to win promotion. In order to do that we’ll have to be at our absolute best in three consecutive games. It sounds strange to say, but I would rather lose in the two-leg semi-final than lose at Wembley.
daggs mate I’m with you on a lot of the things you have posted before Xmas we was awful we started of well then played a long ball style that didn’t work but it didn’t help that the players we got in were not fit or just didn’t suit us I’ve said it so many times there is something about mr Jones I don’t like sometimes what comes out of his mouth does my head in but I didn’t want he to get the sack I just wanted him to do the job of getting us out of this horrible league I really do think that his hands must have been tied in some way but Scott and meathen as we didn’t get some of the players we wanted then when we started to get players with associations with Luton I was thinking it’s then Ben garner club all over again
I still have one thing in mind and it was our assistant manager that said we knew it would take at least 97 minutes to beat shewsbury what if the ref blew his whistle on 95 minutes 2 points lost
I can’t knock how well we have done with all players fit we climbed the table and at one point looked that we could get automatic promotion and credit to mr jones
but we have sent out players on loan that have played for us brought in two loan players one who is pretty good but only gets 5 minutes on the pitch and the other one was totally useless last Saturday
1 million for a really bad striker our superstar no9 is bad business im hoping he might come good next season fingers crossed
whatever happens at the end of this season keep jones in but please get the board to bring a couple of match winners in weather its midfield defence or up front not players that are near retirement and use a few of our youngsters and don’t send them out on loan I do think sometimes that the reason some of these owners want our club is because of the academy players we bring though and it might make them a lot of money
anyway I can’t see use losing a play off semi final but Wembley might be a game to far I really hope not
Hi CA. I may have said this before, and if I didn’t, I should have. I have loved riding this wave of optimism and have enjoyed the feeling of wanting to watch my team again without dread in my stomach, mostly about the acidic atmosphere. But I really fear us going up this year and part of me doesn’t want to – despite wanting more than anything to get out of this league. But the reality we saw on Saturday is that we are really not ready for the Championship. And its no good thinking we can spend loads of money – it all takes time to build a team as we have seen this year. Ask yourself this. Would you rather go up and have a terrible season struggling to get points and come back down again – or would you rather spend another season building a team that can really compete whilst we have a season like Birmingham?
LP. I believe you have. Personally I am getting too old to put good things on the back burner.
I think Duchatelet proved that a modicum of investment combined with a forward thinking infrastructure supporting a progressive manager would’ve yielded survival and laid a foundation. Unfortunately Duchatelet did none of those things.
Good point, well made!!! But you are still a whipper snapper though so don’t give me the old card.
Have you read the Methven interview in MOD? Changed my opinion, as we are allowed to do.
I have not. Annoyingly I passed the sellers a few times on Saturday and kept telling myself I’d pick up a copy later, but never did.
