Peterborough United 3 Charlton Athletic 0

Operation Weston Homes Stadium can be consigned to Room 101 with many others over the years.

The Addicks were backed by big numbers but it was a very disappointing day as Peterborough unravelled our defensive solidity and we weren’t able to convert even one of many goalscoring opportunities.

Peterborough have been so much better since we last played them six weeks ago. Their front four could all play at a higher level, and they caused us no end of problems all game and should have scored more than three.

On a freshly wet pitch the game began at pace and was very open, but we held the upper hand, our press was really good and our lines of defence snuffled out Posh’s fast-paced counter attacks, although the warning signs were there.

Chances came and were either squandered or fell at the final pass. Lloyd Jones hit the bar with a header but the momentum changed from a schoolboy error.

Ramsey played a short back pass to Mannion in the box, but instead of hoofing it he fell onto the ball and collected it in his hands. That resulted in an indirect free kick from inside the box.

We dealt with that as has become expected, but we didn’t reset properly for the next phase and Hughes was unmarked to head home a poorly defended cross.

A few minutes later we didn’t heed earlier warning’s as Posh broke quickly and ex-academy Addick Odoh turned a backtracking Coventry inside out to fire home a second.

We started the 2nd half as if we meant business but despite more good opportunities we never came close other than a Small shot and an Aneke header.

Meanwhile at the other end our defence became increasingly shaky and Posh should have been further ahead before Mothersille killed the game with 11 minutes left.

Today was going to happen at some point, it is now about learning and moving forwards.

🎙️“They have a front four who can hurt you but we’ve had 25 shots today and not scored despite the amount of crosses, territory and set-pieces we’ve had,” said Jones. “That shows it is a lack of quality from us. When we were on top we didn’t score and we gifted them the first goal. They are a real threat in the transition and we didn’t defend that well enough.” – Nathan Jones

We were not at the races today and Peterborough deserved to win the game.Nathan was accurate in his view of our performance and I’m still scratching my head at how poor our play was after our run of wins.I think automatic promotion is not happening but we need to get back to winning ways on Saturday.Credit to our travelling fans who sang their hearts out until the bitter end.

The Statistics are very worrying and been on about the cutting edge and we have not put teams to the sword with the exception of the 5-1 away win at Northampton/Yes, as CAFC supporters we were expecting a result like yesterday but this next game was always going to be a crucial one but IMHO it is an absolutely mammoth one and concerned and surely not due a home defeat nut let’s hope, yet again we bounce back and we need to straight away and yes Hudds would have a gam in hand and think right down to 8the there is a chance of a play-off spot.Football is a very strange game but thinking top 2 is now out of reach, but you never know some more twists and turns for sure?Hopefully onwards and upwards for CAFC and concerned about Jones carrying and injury and others as wekk but Jones stated we have the squad good enough but we shall see in due course.COYR.

I said on here at the start of the season with unfit players and hoof ball we wouldn’t get even near the playoffs but how things can change if some other result went our way last week and this weekend we could have been looking at automatic promotion and as I’ve said before I don’t like Nathan but I don’t have to he has a job to get us promoted and I think he will through the playoffs the board have let us down can you imagine if we had fit players and maybe a few more players with a eye for goal and and midfield goal scorer and play maker we might be in wrexhams position today was just one of those days and Peterborough seem to be a team that always do something to us even though they are not a great side but there are still a few games to go oh how I wish Sunderland where in 5th place

another trip to Wembley I think 🤔

Yes, Danny completely agree and Sunderland will be in the play-off in the Championship and please God CAFC are ther also but there will be some twists and turns to come but thinking 2nd place as gone and football is a funny ole game isn’t it. Concerned about Jones injury and it looks like Leaburn could well be out and wow Aneke and Ahhadme and can not hit a barn door.

25 efforts on goal but just 4 on target and not one of them from a striker! As I have said previously, our big downfall, apart from Godden, is not having forwards who can score! Ahadme is dreadful, Chucks is past it and its embarrassing watching him play now, Hylton is too old and too slow, Leaburn hasn’t been 100% on his game since his injury and needs more time but now has another injury and Jones doesn’t seem to want to give Kanu a chance, who has now picked up a similar inury to the one he got in the Birmingham game, when he had a great game!

So at present we have just one decent forward who is fit Godden. So currently without any other good forward, I can’t see anyway we will get an automatic place and if we are able to get into the playoffs, I couldn’t see us going any further, unless Leaburn and Kanu who has a good speed on him are fit and both in the squad, as Godden defintely wouldn’t be able to cope on a large pitch by himself up front, if we got to Wembley!

I’m worried that once Mlles is fully fit and scoring goals he will go he doesn’t look happy at the moment

I do rate miles very highly indeed but he does seem to get injured very frequently a lot of players fall over a blade of grass and have weeks off. They should be more like karters my 14 yr old son when he was 10 had a massive karting accident in Lincolnshire in April 2021 air ambulance was called couldn’t feel his legs for 45 mins this was at 55mph, 2 weeks later back winning races think these footballers should be more like those thought I would share that with all you addicks

Mike, totally agree and this next game is not only crucial but absolutely mammoth and the statistics and we have won 6 on the bounce at home but we have yet to be ruthless in front of goal and yes God forbid Hudds turn us over and let us not forget due a defeat at home and ffs pleas no and a game in hand.

Also and several seasons ago who dented Hudds long unbeaten record and that should be a huge incentive and yes extremely worried and please God make it to the play-offs!!!

25 shots on target says we created the chances – but the inability to score underlines a season long weakness, we haven’t scored enough goals all season. Even when we’ve been ahead we’ve struggled for that third goal to kill games off.

Of the three we conceded the first should never have happened, the second was a fast break and good finish, the last came when we were pushing for a goal and left a few too many holes. But we kept pushing until the end, it’s not as though we disintegrated. Had we scored first I wonder how the game would have panned out?

We have looked a bit tired these last few matches and worryingly a few players seem to have picked up a few niggling injuries. Josh Edwards has a groin strain, Lloyd Jones seems to be playing through some kind of injury – he apparently saw a specialist last Monday, DK rolled an ankle playing for the U21s, AMB looks to be doubtful for the rest of the season and Miles Leaburn is off to see the doctor’s about a quad strain. We’re not quite at the stage where we are raiding the Academy for players but we might need to before the end of the season.

With a decent attacking midfielder who could chip in with a few goals we might even have made top two, (which is probably now out of reach) and not had to worry about the lottery of the play-offs. Whatever division we are in next season, one of those is a must. Dig deep owners !!!

A lot of criticism for our lack of cutting edge but that loss was down to Mannion and then Tennai Watson for falling asleep. Genuinely don’t think we’re losing that game if Mannion doesn’t pick the ball up, he’s cost us a possible top 2 which is gone now.

But yes lack of striking options always going to cost us. Difference with the top 3 is the likes of Rodriguez, Sam Smith, Stansfield, Kone. We had Chuks leading the line yesterday trying to rescue a point. Respectfully he’s a labouring oaf, Leaburn injured again and realistically not much better anyway. Suddenly it’s Godden that needs to be wrapped in cotton wool as don’t much fancy our play-off chances with Ahadme up top.
