Big win, big win

I had been trying to keep an eye on the Addicks last day of the transfer window whilst at a work symposium where back to back meetings only allow breaks for more coffee and a pee.

After a month of inaction it all happened today as the club signed on loan Alex Gilbert and Tom McIntyre, moved out Zach Mitchell on loan and sold REG permanently to Leyton Orient.

REG took the chance to move to play-off hopefuls Leyton Orient. He was a likeable chap but the fact he was best known for his post victory camera ditty meant that he needed to find first team playing action elsewhere.

REG was probably in the high quartile of earners I’d guess and he made 31 appearances for the Addicks.

Tom McIntyre was liked at Reading and was sold for a pittance a year ago to Portsmouth. Possibly the step up may have been beyond him, but we can take a look at the left-sided defender, he can challenge Gillesphey and is a younger upgrade on Dan Potts.

Apparently a late move for young winger Jewison Bennette from Sunderland fell through.

Biggest win of the window was Lloydy signing on and Small staying put.

Well done on the symposium, sounds grim.

I make that we have 22 senior first team players in the squad now which must be the leanest it’s been in many, many years. They can finally all fit into one training pitch! Charlie will be pleased. Luckily they are all fit (for the moment)

Can’t help feeling that (with missing out on the Sunderland lad) that Danny Hylton will be offered a player/coach contract until the end of the season now.

I liked REG, he was a character and seemed to be popular/well liked and he wasn’t a bad player – but we’ve traded him on and brought in Tom McIntyre. On paper that looks like a good bit of business.

Currently we have eight fully fit defenders (Tennai Watson is back in training) so how would REG get into a team as a first choice starter? Does he even get on the bench? For me he only starts if we have an injury and suspension crisis. While we have deep pocketed backers that’s no reason to keep a highish earner in deep reserve on the off chance that he might be needed. Good luck to him.

CA, I wouldn’t say that this is a big win big win, as just looking at various comments online from both other sites and reporters, personally I have never heard of either player, neither bring real optimism, as Alex Gilbert has only played a total of 27 games in 4 years as a professional and Tom McIntyre wasn’t particularly thought of by both his previous clubs, Pompey & Reading fans have said he’s not very good, similar to the Millwall fans views on Allan Campbell and they were right!

So in all honesty it appears, like per normal, these were probably panic loan signings at the last minute as others were being shifted out with no real backups, as neither has played much football in the last year, similar to the winger who we didn’t get on loan from Sunderland who also had hardly played.

Which really is a big concern and also makes a mockery of Jone’s previous comments of, “we only really want to buy players and not loan them, unless they are going to be better than what we have and will improve the squad” Well I can’t see how any of those two/three can assumed to be an improvement, when I suspect no one at Charlton has ever seen any of them playing for the last year or so, as they have hardly played, except for one or two games?

Sincerely hope I am wrong but we have had so many flops over the last years on players who no one has previously ever seen or heard of, including Charlton so called scouts! Now if it was a someone who had previously played for Luton! 🙂

A Big Win was reference to REG’s little saying into the on-field camera after a win….

Must have missed that CA! As if his saying, is as poor as a lot of his defending, which it appears to be, I wouldn’t have bothered to watch it! 🙂

Agree with you Steve….retaining Lloyd and Small was vital for progress….I’m still not sure about the new signings but we will see how it goes…

CA I’ve attended many meetings like your in and they test your resolve, patience and energy….bit like watching Charlton 😃

So the window has closed with us having off loaded 7 players and just 2 have come in. Neither of the 2 new players has played a league match this season!….Brilliant, what can possibly go wrong ?

Did not see the REG exit coming. Seemed like a good character although limited to what used to be called a “utility” player. Wish him well. Best “signing” was Lloyd Jones I would say..

Seven out (including loans) and two in. If we get a few injuries, this is going to look very foolish …………

The goal was the reduce the squad and let’s be honest once again the owners have a lower wage roll post window. Maybe not quite the ambition we should be aspiring to.

CA you are right on the nail.

Looks like nothing has changed, same old game plan, as they probably couldn’t agree a fee with Duchcy, like everyone previous, to buy the ground plus the true money spinner the training ground, so they could make some real money building new homes, retail complex whatever on the site, to give them a large profit, which this current government would approve in a second, to get extra revenue!

So for now looks like they will continue just as is, cash in on any players that may command a large fee, whilst continuing at a slow pace to see if things alter.

Lets be honest here, why would someone invest in a Football club when they hardly knew anything really about the sport, unless it was to make money for them? Plus if you are an owner of anything that you believe in and want to be part of, you would be vocal about it, like most owners of Football clubs are, not just keep in the background and let their flunkies, speak on your behalf!

Well that’s the first ‘goal’ they’ve managed so far.

Some of us long suffering Charlton Athletic fans have a different goal.

    Promotion ………………….
