Alex Gilbert in on loan

It’s February and we have the first January window signing. Alex Gilbert (not Gilbey) has signed on loan from Middlesbrough until the end of the season.

Gilbert is an attacking midfielder, but can play out wide or a little deeper. Time will tell if he is a Conor Gallagher or a Lewis Fiorini.

The 23-year old hasn’t had much game time, despite his good reputation, especially among the Boro fan base, and I suspect this is make or break time for the Birmingham born lad.

We wish him luck of course, and Jones’ squad needed some more attacking third options.

On paper a good signing, Boro just signed Morgan Whittaker so he’s fallen down the pecking order.

I presume we have the possibility of a permanent deal – simply because Boro have no need for him.

The negative is that he’s hardly played – he started the cup games for Boro but has just 70 minutes of game time in the Championship. Like the chap he’s replaced, Allan Campbell, he was mostly an unused sub who got a few minutes here and there. I’ve no idea what his match fitness levels are, but at the moment he doesn’t need to be thrown in at the deep end.

It seems Zach Mitchell has gone on loan to St Johnstone – although there’s nothing official. Maybe we are signing a centre back in this window?

Would have preferred a permanent deal and someone with some experience of a promotion push, but us beggers can’t be choosers. Best of luck to Alex while he’s with us, and hope he gets some game time.

Well lets hope he’s not another Alex Gilbey, Frasier or an A. Campbell and is better than Terry Taylor we let go on loan, as it will come back to haunt Jone’s if our midfield falls short and costs us this season!

Plus it appears the only other player we are trying to get on board before the last minute, is an Oxford winger, when we desperately need another decent centre back as backup, especially as Jones has also now decided to let Zac Mitchell go on loan to St Johnstone!

Let’s hope that Gilbert is a good signing, we certainly need to bolster options in midfield.

Zach Mitchell to St.Johnstone is my opinion a bad move for the lad. St.J are bottom of the Scottish Premiership and that is not a suitable place for him to gain experience. Playing in a team that is likely to lose on a regular basis is not a good scenario.
