Charlton Athletic 1 Shrewsbury Town 0

Frustratingly annoying since 1905.

94th minute and somehow Shipley doesn’t put them in front. 96th minute Small slots home and cue absolute bedlam in front of the Covered End.

Last season we lose that under Michael Appleton and although we were seconds away from what would been a dispiriting result, you cannot I tell you beat a last minute winner.

Shrewsbury may sit bottom but under Gareth Ainsworth their newfound spirit and doggedness gives them every chance of staying up.

It was a regular story of being patient and trying to break an organized and walled defence down, although to Shrewsbury’s credit there was little or no black arts.

We lacked quality, the final ball was often rushed or misjudged. If Small had a consistent end product he’d be in a squad two divisions up. Leaburn and Berry were disappointing, but Docherty and Coventry kept the fire burning and Small and TC were willing foot soldiers. Aneke again made a difference when he came on.

Clean sheet’s matter, you keep a clean sheet then wins are more likely. Lloyd Jones was excellent again today. I read he had the most complete passes of any player on the pitch, and he may have still rescued a more on target hit from Shipley before we scored.

We still look a long way off a promotion winning team, but we are at least at the races.

🎙️“We spoke to the lads about it being 96, 97 minutes that we may win the game but that we had to believe and had to keep going. At times there will be frustrations and a bad pass – but it is about the three points. I think maybe the lads are believing us now.” – Curtis Fleming

A painful and frustrating watch until the very end but I’ll take an ugly march toward playoff relevance!

    Let’s be honest

    A poor game

    Two poor teams

    And a lucky win

But everyone left with a smile on their face

That’s two rather lucky wins on the bounce.

A usual tedious performance, a stroke of luck when their bloke fluffed a golden chance. Then the goal at the death.

Our strikers still aren’t doing it regularly enough. Imagine where we might be if we still had last seasons League one top goalscorer.

I still despise N.Jones for his stupidity. At least he eventually learned ‘hoofball’ wasn’t working and now seems to have learned the subs. are there to be used when things aren’t going well.

A couple of reinforcements would be welcome, though I suspect every win we get makes that less likely.

how did the goal arrive if not from ‘hoofball’?

A typical League One match between two sides, one who needed three points and one who would have regarded a 0-0 draw as a massive result and so defended and niggled away to get it only to be denied in the dying seconds. Shipley did have a great chance but he still had some work to do, fortunately that cross was poor as well as his attempt at connecting with it, we’ll never know what might have happened.

Other than that we worked hard, with around 70% possession, possibly though there was a bit too much perspiration and not enough inspiration and no doubt we are missing that creative touch in the final third.

Thierry Small took the goal well – on his weaker foot too, his celebration showed what it meant. I take your point about his needing an end product but he’s only 20 and still learning his game. We need goals from around the team especially when the forwards aren’t delivering, this and the Bolton game netted six points and three goals scored, but none from the forward line. On a slightly longer time scale we’ve now picked up 16 points from the last 21 available and have the opportunity to get into the play-offs in midweek. The players need to take that chance.

We need a reinforcement or two because this team will struggle without some extra squad options. We’ve lost three players in this window and while Kayne Ramsay and Zach Mitchell are back from injuries we still have a lot of football to play and a lot of cup finals in that time.

Too right CA and if you can’t be happy with a 96th minute winner there ain’t much hope!

Never easy when a team scrapping for survival park the bus so to keep going to the death is a credit but clearly we’re a difficult bunch to please! And those that keep banging on about Alfie May need to keep up, he wanted his move, pushed for his move and the manager thought the squad would be better without him. Current league position kind of vindicates.

With Ramsey back, would expect to see Small switch to the left where he can hopefully just deliver quality crosses instead of the cutting inside and blazing over thing.

Sounds like a bit more movement during the window with a meaningful upgrade or two incoming, let’s see but I love that the easy loan options developing talent for doner clubs has been ditched with a focus on developing our own👏

I for one Steve, keep banging on about Alfie May because he was pushed out by Jones. You’ve swallowed the lies that were created as a cover.

      I’ll explain the truth again:

NJ decided he didn’t want/like Alfie and thought the transfer fee more useful.

So he made it clear to Alfie, he would not be a regular starter. This did two things. It left Alfie unsure about his future and it alerted other clubs to a transfer opportunity.

Eventually Alfie was offered a good deal by Birmingham and decided to ask for a transfer. Who could blame him? At 31 it’s probably his last big payday.

What kind of half-wit manager freezes out the then top scorer in League one?

One called Nathan Jones is the answer you’re looking for.

Pretty sure the £20K per week he’s pocketing at Birmingham had nothing to do with his desire to leave.

As I said. But you’re deliberately seeing only half the truth.

100% right about only one can come in the mid-field and what happens if any of the current 3 get injured and it pisses me off and this is CAFC getting rid of players without replacements coming in first!!!Yes, the strikers need to score more goals and well Ahadme a total waste of money and there are still some deadwood to clear out and yes AC for sure.It will show exactly what ambition and aims are with this Board and what could possibly go wrong with Snidy Scott , Methven and others in charge?Yes and to be fair even 2 weeks ago most of us thought we were far out of reach of the playoffs. We do need at least a couple of signings to freshen things up but we still need wins on the trot.

Also sort these 3 out of contract players tied down and realise it is going to be difficult and also any loyalty
