20 Years; 20 Places: No.14 Iceland

Another Place on my list of 20 to commemorate my 20 Years of writing this Blog.

In no particular order, but each one memorable. No. 14 is Iceland.

In recent years Iceland has became a popular place to visit, even from the USA, but we went almost 20 years ago to seek puffins, geysers, volcano’s, strong coffee, Europe’s largest glacier and biggest desert plus what was then described as the world’s cleanest air and purest tap water.

We based ourselves in the architectural rich capital of Reykjavik, the world’s northernmost capital city and also one of its smallest. A home for dreamers and individuals, neither Scandinavian, nor European but Icelandic and proud of their Viking past.

We travelled around Iceland a fair bit visiting Thingvellir National Park to watch in awe the dramatic rift in the earth where the American tectonic plate tears away from the Euroasian plate.

We then went to Geysir, a place that gave its name to the rest of the world’s hot springs. We drove further inland to the breathtaking expanse of water and mountains that is Gullfoss (photo).

We rode horses, sped along on snowmobiles through icy mountains and covered ourselves in silica mud in the bubbly waters of the Blue Lagoon. I ate cod chins and whale meat, and drunk some strong beers. It was a memorable trip.

Iceland. Birthday trip for the other-half. 2006.

There’s so many places in the world 🌍 that I’d like to visit, Iceland 🇮🇸 being one of them. What were temperatures like when you visited and would winter be the time to go? Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

    Hopefully one day.
