Aaron Henry goes on loan

The first of the obvious surplus to requirements loan out yesterday.

Aaron Henry has secured a season-long loan at National League side Rochdale. There is a January break clause.

This would signal the end of Henry’s Charlton career with his contract expiring next summer. Rochdale are facing their second season in the National League and have as much a chance as any of getting up in a far more open division.

Henry had fallen behind the younger group of academy players such as Anderson, Asiimwe, Leaburn, Kanu and Campbell.

Henry always looked an intelligent player preferring to sit deep in midfield, but L1 is a harsh place to grow that sort of game, and when he was tried his speed of thought just didn’t appear quick enough.

I would also assume under a myriad of managers and coaches that other qualities and attributes to make it into the first team scene have not materialized.

It is fortunate, and credit to him and his agent, that he has found a loan home early in pre-season allowing him to settle as opposed to being shifted on transfer deadline day.

Makes you wonder about the impact on a players confidence, when it’s clear his parent club no longer value him?

He spent last season on loan, first at Crawley and then Wealdstone – the same level he will be playing at this season.

There’s a decent player in there…but playing central midfield in league football is tough and an almost vertical learning curve.

I think we’ll release him next summer, but hopefully he’ll learn from this experience and work his way back. The National League is a tough division there are a lot of ex league players plying their trade and those who’ve been released not to mention those like Henry on loan.
