Five pearlers
Five beautifully executed penalties and somehow we survive into the last week of the tournament and the final four.
It was a much better performance from England, against the best side they have faced. Switzerland are a good illustration of a team greater than its parts, and were unfortunate to come out the wrong side of a penalty shoot-out.
For long period’s though we are still a snooze fest. You can easily nip to the garage pull a couple of beers out of the fridge, open and pour them and put a large bag of Quavers in a bowl and sit back down on the couch and still not have missed anything noteworthy.
80 minutes until our first shot at goal, but what a shot it was. Saka was excellent and I think all of our hearts purred when he put that penalty in. He does seemingly cross fan-rival boundaries with the way he plays and conducts himself.
There were better performances from a number of players, there needed to be, but all Addicks will be proud of how Ezri Konsa played.
The subs all appeared very reactive again from Southgate, but they worked and now we will face the Dutch on Wednesday.
None of Europe’s higher ranked sides have been good at this tournament. Spain have been the best by a long way, but still don’t look like world beaters. The Copa America going on at the same time has also been a bit of a wet blanket. Maybe a post that for another day.
Onto the semi-finals then and it doesn’t matter now how we play does it. It conjointly never mattered how Charlton played in a play-off semi-final, the result is what is remembered.

Don’t know about you CA but I’m starting to love this team…but kind of in the same way as you love the u**y b**d when you’re staring through beer goggles as the lights go up at 2am…and for sure who cares it’s just the result now…Lewis made in England 1 Netherlands 0 this afternoon, how we’d take that on Wednesday night 🤞🏼
Re Alfie May situation. I have read that his family may have moved to Doncaster and he asked for a transfer. Can you confirm this or not ad the case maybe. Many thanks
That is true, Peter.
Whilst Alfie’s is a Kent lad and he has family down here, he met his wife when he played for Donny and she has her family in Yorkshire and her and his kids wanted to return home. He said in his farewell video that Alfie’s son also had trouble getting into local schools in Kent.
The family moved back in the summer leaving him playing village cricket and clearly considering his future. Donny bid, Birmingham offered a bigger a fee and bigger wages. Initially CAFC turned it down and Alfie put in a transfer request.
Birmingham is not near Doncaster though, last time I looked..
Thank you for your courteous and prompt reply re Alfie May.
I am glad you told me this as for the life of me I could not understand why Nathan Jones and Charlton let him go and it was putting a big question mark regarding my ongoing support which is at 71 years.
Interrsting you mention getting school for kids and life in Kent. Life I Kent in todays troubling times is so far removed from Yorkshire its is like moving to a different country. Worrying for us all.
I know the area well and Huddersfield thought they had him which is very close to Donny as you will be aware.
But at 31 Alfie had a much better offer at Birmingham so I can see why he chose them for rhe next few years.
I wish him well he is a nice lad.
On closing Birmingham from Doncaster is some 90 miles and a 2 hour drive!
Thanks
Peter
FWIW this is the video that Alfie May posted on the club’s twitter feed which explains his situation:
Charlton Athletic FC on X: “A message from @alfiemay ❤️ #cafc https://t.co/X2ewDPIMNX” / X
Of course we could have told him to respect his contract but that could lead to an unhappy player who knackers himself out driving to/from Yorkshire every week in between matches and training and then leaves on a free when his contract expires.
All in all this was the right conclusion, we’ve been classy about letting him go, Alfie has done it the right way and we got good money for him which has been recycled into signing two replacements who have been signed well before the season starts. Nevertheless there’ll be some who’ll want to blame the club because something…
I also watched the video he did when he signed for Brum, I’ve never seen a player look so gutted when making one of those “this is a massive club” statements at their unveiling.
For someone who appears naturally bubbly, he couldn’t even crack a smile for the Brum video.
England played well and dealt with a spirited Switzerland team really professionally. Ezri Konsa had a great game, Switzerland seemed to target him presumably thinking that he’d be the weakest link in the defence but he didn’t put a foot wrong.
I’m a bit worried about Harry Kane though, he looked knackered. I could see that GS wanted to keep him on the pitch for the inevitable pens but eventually had to sub him off.
I thought he was our worst player yesterday.
