The mysterious case of George Dobson

Word reaches us from Székesfehérvár that George Dobson and his family won’t be leaving their Chigwell home and moving to the historical central Hungarian region after all.

It was strange that Fehérvár hadn’t announced Dobson’s signing once his Charlton one expired, especially as they had made quite a big deal out of it in January, but it turns out the ‘binding pre-contract’ has been annulled.

Fehérvár lost a major sponsor and their wage budget cut for the new season. The club also changed head coaches. Bartosz Grzelak who was in charge in January has been replaced by Tamás Pető.

Dobson was in Hungary last week, but after discussions the club and Dobson decided to mutually tear up the contract and the deal has been cancelled.

The Hungarian press said that for his part Dobbo cited family reasons. How his agent convinced him in the first place that this was a good idea is crazy. This is his career and family on the line here, and despite how much I like George, this is all bit bonkers.

This does leave Dobbo without a club this summer, but once word gets out I suspect he won’t be short of offers.

Question on all our minds though is will that be Charlton? Nathan Jones has been gushing over Dobbo, and put the club of course in an embarrassing situation, none more so than ex-board director Andy Scott.

Can you imagine Jones sitting down with Scott as he offers George more money than he was prepared to in January? A fly on a wall indeed.

George could still command more money from elsewhere. Birmingham, Huddersfield, Wrexham? Maybe a fresh start is what he needs. Peterborough is reasonably local, Wycombe are showing ambition. Oxford can offer a route to The Championship.

Or does Jones turn on the charm? Or do we not need both Dobson and Conor Coventry? Maybe we can sell Coventry to Birmingham?

So many questions….

Top marks for the Hungarian names!

    Questions indeed.

If you add this situation to the mysteries of CBT and Alfie May ….. when do seemingly random unaligned facts start to become a pattern?

I find this whole saga crazy. If NJ genuinely rated him, why didn’t he insist on an improved contract for him?

    What a mess

Agree Daggs, it seems to be all hype by NJ just to appease the fans! He probably wasn’t that keen on Dobson the same as with May as they were the two most influential and best players in that crap team and just wants to bring in his own players, especially the ones he knows and respect him! You only had look at the times he and May were arguing with one another when the team were losing and Alfie was giving his all whilst some of the other players were just swaning about, he definately doesn’t want any player to challenge him!

Mike and Daggs Precisely but with these Owners and Snidy Scott still at te helm and Jones seems very happy at the moment.

Surely that’s to do with the pre contract signed by Dobson with the Hungarian side and equally, wasn’t that all done before Jones arrived? So, not a lot that Jones could do.

Jones arrived at the start of February. Whilst technically Dobbo could have signed a pre-contract by then (possible from January) that would in football terms be remarkably rapid.

The club needs to grab him now….give him the contract he deserves before Birmingham grab him from under our noses….

100% agree with that, they should have offloaded and got shot of him ages ago to anyone just for free to get him off the books, but they still seem to think he will be able to do a stint!

Strange how he always seems fit enough to go on their annual jaunt abroad jumping and laughing around in the sea, then gets injured in his pre season warm up friendly games and goes back on the treatment table never to be seen until months later!

I think Dobson had signed his precontract before NJ arrived so little he could do other than show up Scot’s stupidity by praising Dobson and retaining him as captain, I hope the situation can be retrieved and Dobson re-signed

Dobson had signed his Fehever contract before Jones arrived. Jones convinced Scott for the club to keep him until the summer and Dobbo then pushed out his move from Jan to June foregoing a small fee in the process.
