Matt Godden signs from Coventry

I’m sure we will rue comparing Matt Godden with Alfie May, so I will try not too.

33 years old in a few weeks, Coventry striker Matt Godden has signed a two-year contract with a club option of a further year. He passed a medical today and is expected to be unveiled tomorrow.

Godden has been playing his football at a higher level these past four seasons, and has scored 30 goals in 112 games, but a lot of those were from the subs bench.

Previous to that in L1 and L2 he averaged 17 goals a season. Born in Canterbury he was on other club’s radar, including promoted Oxford, and a quick snapshot shows Cov fans being disappointed about his departure.

Rich Cawley is reporting that Godden will be one of two strikers joining the club.

Godden’s fee will be undisclosed I have no doubt, but he had a year left on his Coventry contract.

OFFICIAL: Godden signs 2-year deal, club option of a third.

Very interesting to see who the next one is as they are likely to be the main man amongst our strikers. Godden has always come across as a good finisher but weren’t we told NJ wants athletic players who can press. Unfortunately he has never had pace is now 33 pointed out by Cov fans who rate him but saying time is catching up a bit for their level. I hope he proves me wrong and all the best to him but I’m not particularly whelmed by it.

A big Charlton welcome to Matt. Just a couple of pointers for you – and sorry as none of it is your fault:

    1. You need to score 25+”goals this season.
    2. you need to have a 100% workrate for 90+ minutes every game
    3. you need to use your infectious personality to lift the dressing room if/when the fans turn on you (although its likely to be the manager).
    4. You need to clean Alfie May’s boots when he comes to the Valley and scores a hat-trick for birmingham.

    good luck.

good one LP. And your comments CA measured as always. But sorry, for me entering the sixth decade of supporting CAFC, literally 40 years as a season ticket holder, its almost the limit after so many really crap years. For the first time for a long time I was looking forward to a new dawn and a real possibility of promotion. Instead what we fans have been given latterly over this sage is the usual opaque vague and misleading information. Why not just tell us the truth. Alfie’s video smacks of a kind of story put together to placate the fans, was he basically just eased out. Makes zero sense to sell the best striker in the division by a mile when you should be building a team around him for promotion. NJ has been credited with saving our last season, in fact it was Alfie and Dobbo. Both gone. Can’ t wait to see the best players you’ve never heard of as their replacements.

I agree with a lot of what you say Mike but I don’t think it’s wrong to say NJ saved us. Both May and Dobbo were ever presents during our record-equalling 18 game winless run (though undoubtedly they were our best players last season). But for sure if we didn’t replace Appleton we would have gone down and NJ turned things around pretty darn quickly.

I think in their own way both Alfie and NJ have a great love for Charlton, but they are simply not compatible. NJ clearly has a vision for how to get the club competing for promotion again. Most of us can’t get out head around how that doesn’t involve Alfie May, and of course it’s desperately sad because for a brief moment we had found a player that I think we all felt connected to.

But it’s been said many times before that there’s only one way to go with Nathan Jones and that’s to back him 100% in every decision, without question. He has spoken about being bold in this window. Well, you can’t say selling the league’s top scorer isn’t bold. Time will tell if it works.

Totally agree with LP & Mike Halls, Matt Godden will never be an Alfie May! N.J. has been feeding us porkies re May, he couldn’t wait to get him out, at least the previous managers, whilst being mostly clueless, didn’t try to bull…. us!

Coventry website indicates that with add-ons the fee could rise to 400k. But at 35 his potential sell on value in a year or two will be negligible so the fee is effectively dead money. But if he helps us to promotion it will have been worthwhile.

I spoke to a friend who is a Coventry supporter and asked for a run-down on MG – he said “he was more of a nuisance than a goal scorer last season. He was better the season before and played more games”

I imagine we signed him more for his experience and overall play than goals. But, we need goals….

Exactly, with all this influx of players from various clubs – am I wasting my time being a Valley Gold member?

When I look at our once young players in Premier teams, are we just a nursery for clubs with money?

I still think we will have a lot of academy players that will be in around the first team next season. Undoubtedly, especially at our level, we will always sell young players. We always have.
