Dobbo going or staying?

The conversation on whether George Dobson will stay or leave in the summer has got louder and louder these past few weeks. There are over 3,300 comments on the Charlton Life Forum, and Nathan Jones spent the bulk of his post game chat throwing the club’s decision makers under the bus whilst singing George’s praises.

The people that matter – those that were witness to the deal in the first place including Fehérvár, George’s agent, Andy Scott and George himself have been pretty silent on the matter.

Personally I think Dobbo’s final flourish at The Valley on Saturday will be the last time we see him in SE7. There is a signed pre-contract between Dobbo and Fehérvár, and effectively after June 30th he becomes their player.

Therefore if he were to wear a Charlton shirt come next season the club would need to buy him back. Simple as that.

Nathan Jones is wielding a big influence at Charlton, and he has made his feelings remarkably clear and public, but this fight I suspect he knows he will have to walk away from, but he has masterfully belittled Andy Scott in the process.

As I have opined on these pages before I’d pay a west stand match ticket to be a fly on the wall of the office where Scott, Rodwell and Jones gather to talk transfer turkey.

I also expect Gabriel Brener to be a lot more visible in these conversations as the purveyor of the ownership’s money. Global Football Partners cannot be very happy at what they have got for their investment in players thus far.

The club did make Dobson a new contract offer and then improved it, but from what I understand it was one derisory and two quite denigrating.

Dobbo has been just about the only thing worth supporting these past three depressing seasons. There’s maybe better out there, although it doesn’t look to me that Conor Coventry is one them, but there is no better Charlton player who gives his absolute everything and plays like his life depends on it.a

Add that to a smile a mile wide and infectious personality and that is what we are saying farewell to after this weekend.

If he does leave, he will be a great loss to the club as you have eloquently stated above.
Perhaps we might get two for the price of one, CA, namely Dobbo staying and Andy Scott leaving? One can but dare to dream.

Talking of dreams, Patrick Bauer is out of contract at Preston. Perhaps a final season for him in SE7??

yep – only Dobson and May would’ve been in The Class of ‘19 – I’d imagine Jones is using it to highlight Scott’s ineptitude and manoeuvre him out the door…hope so…if we say goodbye to both of them it’d soften the blow.

The days of injury prone frees and loans on deadline day are behind us (aren’t they?).

Andy Scott and indeed the SMT team have made the biggest cock-up in their handling of negotiations on Dobbos new contract.

It was clear from the outset that a major error of judgement was made.I understand that Dobbo and his agent wanted a minor increase in his wages but Scott dug his heels in a refused to agree or provide a counter offer.

We all know how Dobbo has given his all since he joined Charlton and he is a top quality player who saved us from relegation this season. His passing, tackling and distribution has always stood out as being the best in our league.

I fear that he’s going but you never never know do you?

I am a big Dobbo fan, but to say he has the best passing, tackling and distribution in L1 is pushing it. The fact that he’s going to Hungary and not the Championship says a lot. I’d keep him, but he’s not quite the player that most Charlton fans think he is. Best of a bad bunch maybe!

        Hi Luke

Sorry I have to disagree with you about Dobbo….but everyone has their own perception of his impact on the team performances.

        • It’s a good argument. Is he a Championship player or does he look good because he covers everyone else’s ground and mistakes and has stood out in a poor team.

It’s interesting to me that Jones sees a lot more potential in him.

I’d rather see him stay. He’s better than Coventry and to replace him will eat into our transfer budget.

            Hi CA,

I feel he’s a Championship player and agree he covers players errors at times in a poor team.

I fear he’s gone but in football anything could happen but at a financial cost to Charlton.

All of this shambles could have been avoided.

  5. Was chatting to him in the Vista after the game and asked him how much £ i would have to put in to keep him here – he declined to answer unfortunately. 😥 !!

The whole situation is bizarre…he’s clearly been our best player over the three years he’s been at the club. Many footballers might have reacted negatively to the news that their imminent transfer with presumably a decent pay rise (in February) had been blocked and they might have subsequently pulled out of a few tackles or even gone full Lyle Taylor, but not Dobbo…he has played like he wants to stay.

Then there’s Fehevar, with respect to them, I can’t understand how they are able to offer not just higher wages than us, but also any other football clubs who might have been interested in signing him in the English league pyramid.

Is his wife Hungarian or did he support this club as a kid?

From the silence all round I suspect some negotiations are underway, what we’ll have to pay Fehevar is anyone’s guess. For the sake of our transfer budget I hope that there is a release clause in the deal, but I don’t expect Fehevar to play nice, they stand to make somewhere between a few tens of thousands to a six figure sum on a player who never got anywhere near their club. Needless to say Andy Scott and whoever presided over this shambles should be looking for a new job, it’s not as though the players Scott brought in have been worth it, none of the loanees are in the match day squads, Teddy Taylor seems to have disappeared without a trace…what does he bring to the table?

Whole situation is bizarre, a major cock up from the club, however ultimately Dobbo made the decision to leave. I can’t understand why he would want to opt to play in Hungry over playing for another English Club, only he will know. Of course money talks but he’s hardly at twilight of his career. Maybe before June 30th, the club can buy him back, but think that ship may have sailed.

what a shame Dobbo will be missed, gave his all for the club.
