Exeter City 1 Charlton Athletic 1

That was poor at best and rubbish at worst.

Our passing was especially bad, with long balls continually over hit and short passes often loose, yet we came away with a point and should have won it deep in injury time.

For large chunks of the game it looked like a dead rubber of an end season game, despite being played in front of a sell out crowd.

The Grecians however started like their lives depended on it, and were deservedly ahead after 6 minutes. Ex-Addick and Wembley hero Ben Purrington put Exeter ahead meaning that is now just one clean sheet in 28 games.

Purrington played very well. How many times did we see him appear in opposition boxes when he played for us. Exeter born, the January signing got above Tennai Watson and headed in from close range. Three strapping six-foot centre-backs watched.

We finally started to get into the game and Anderson and Small had shots saved. Then right on half-time it looked as if we’d scored when Dobson dinked over the goalkeeper, but that man Purrington got back to clear off the line. Replays were not clear, but it did look over the line.

2nd half was pretty even but without any real clear cut chances. However just as it was looking like the large Charlton contingent were going to have make the long Good Friday journey home without anything to cheer, sub Aneke won a header from a Bakinson cross that hit his marker and went in.

After that it was a bit like winner takes all as the game moved from end to end in the 9 minutes of injury time, but the best chance fell to Alfie May, who clean through on goal, took a slightly heavy touch past the ‘keeper and could only hit the post.

That would have been a great time to score and in front of the travelling Addicks too, but all the points would not have been deserved.

It was another poor performance with some particularly sluggish and lacklustre display’s. Very few of these players are staking a claim to be in Jones’ squad next season and I’d really like to see him shake it up for Monday.

Elsewhere: It was a good day for the bottom sides, which had me a bit twitchy. Carlisle had the result of the day winning at Peterborough 3-1. Port Vale beat Bristol Rovers 2-0, Cheltenham won at Fleetwood and Cambridge won at Barnsley. Burton drew 1-1 at Wigan.
