CBT moves to Derby

The old broken toe nail injury the day before a game heralded CBT’s departure last week. He had done his Derby media work so it was just a matter of time before his departure was announced once Derby and Charlton had ironed out the intricacies of the deal.

For FFP and past administration reasons the move has been cut as a loan until the end of the season with a loan fee payable up front of £300,000. The move will be made permanent in the summer once CBT’s contract with us expires.

He wanted out and to be nearer home so there was no point standing in CBT’s way, although I hope he remembers where his career was heading when he was signed on a short-term deal under Nigel Adkins in the summer of 2021.

To put in context CBT has played under seven permanent and temporary Charlton managers since then, and Derby have had two.

CBT did bring a ‘get up on your feet’ excitement rarely seen at Charlton in recent years and I think we’ll find replacing CBT’s goals (9) and assists (7) this season pretty much impossible, and as an example despite controlling possession on Saturday particularly 1st half without him we lacked any attacking menace.

Thanks for the memories CBT, see you in a February when I am sure you will run our defence ragged.

Nice touch:

I think part of the deal, is that he won’t be able to play against us.

Surely even this lot (SMT) realise that ex players ALWAYS score against us. As Derby were obviously desperate to get CBT signed then we should have insisted that part of the loan deal was that he was not allowed to play against us (I thought that this was a given with most loan deals) and if that was not acceptable to Derby then the only other way was to stump up the cash now. It appears it is not only our defence that is weak but the management too. What a joke.

Agree no other club allows a loan player to play against them, especially when they will be fighting for promotion and we will probably be in a relegation battle!

Sad loss as CBT is second highest goal scorer and also has the most assists and brought a lot of excitement like May with some of his great runs, which has been the only real upside of watching this pityful team this season.

Now also looks like we will be losing our powerhouse in midfield Dobson for also peanuts! When will Charlton learn to offer the good players longer contracts and also only offer them a new contract with only 6 months left of the old one? No, they like offering the longer contracts to all the injury prone, very average poor, has beens players, who the we can’t get rid of eg Aneke, McGrandles, Jasemi, Frasier who we can’t even loan out now, etc.
As well as Managers, Charlton have been in a shambles on recruitment for years and that includes the last several years under Gallen who had completly lost the plot on advising to get these sort of players onboard, the worst being Aneke, who was injury prone when he left for nothing and Gallen gets him back by paying £300,000, when everyone knew he would be out long term with injuries again. Birmingham were greatful to get him off their books and must have been laughing their heads off when we actually agreed to pay money for him.
