Dave Thomson RIP

Tough to write this, but we lost one of our own today. Dave Thomson, perhaps better known as Dave from Drinking During The Game or Cardinal Sin on Charlton Life passed away this afternoon after a long battle with cancer.

I got to know Dave in the early days of us both blogging and have had the utmost pleasure to get to know him and his family over the years.

Hailing from Scotland, and a proud Scot at that (with a south London accent) he has lived on Charlton Lane for many years and started watching Charlton in 1977. He was a fervent away traveller and well surpassed ‘the 92’ league grounds many moons ago.

Going to an away game, which we never did enough, with Dave, myself, my son, brother and mates was always a good day, despite often having to endure watching us play badly.

His writing on Charlton was perceptive, and his posts always seemed to hit the mark. He had a good gumption to snuff out troubles ahead on and off the pitch and he was very involved in past campaign’s against the recent crooks and charlatans who found their way into our proud football club.

He was so generous, loyal, thoughtful, intelligent and huge fun to be around. It was always one of my highlights on a trip home to meet him in The Royal Oak for a pint.

I am devastated as I know many people are that knew him. I will miss him greatly.

My deepest condolences to his wife Nic, and their two teenage daughters 💔

That is so sad CA. Yours and his blogs are the only ones i read regularly since new york stopped. Reading all the tributes on CL i realise ours paths must have crossed many times – had i known it was Drinking when we passed in the street i would have loved to talk to him. Cherish your memories. Am really going to miss his writing. Xx

    Lovely post.

I met Dave on the East Terrace when we were both 17, we hit it off immediately and became firm friends, travelling to many games together. We were good friends away from football too, getting up to all the stuff that young men get up to…mainly drinking too much in The George in Greenwich…that Hurlimann Lager was so much stronger then.

Dave was a larger than life character, you would never fail to have a good time if Dave was around.

As you say, a very proud Scot and loyal Charlton supporter, he will be missed by so many of us.

    RIP Thommo…a true Charlton legend.

Sorry for the loss of your mate, Dave, CA. It was a shock to hear the news yesterday.
Through your respective blogs i know how close you both were.
I never had the pleasure of meeting Dave but clearly from all the comments on CL, Twitter and here he was a top bloke.
His passion for Charlton shone through via Drinking During The Game and it’s sad that we won’t hear his thoughts any more.
Dave wrote so incisively and cut through the crap of recent years and always hit the nail on the head.
My condolences to his family and friends.

I am really saddened to hear the news regarding Dave. As someone that rarely uses social media, I commented once on Drinking During the Game regarding Charlton and Dave sent me a very kind reply.

CA what you and everyone else that keep these blogs and sites going, must remember is that all of you give something of yourselves to these sites, and you should never forget that there is always a connection not just Charlton to the reader, whether they make a comment or not.

By reading Dave’s blogs you just knew that he was Charlton through and through and really cared for what went on at the club.

My thoughts are with Dave’s family at this sad time.

I never had the Pleasure of meeting Dave however I have followed his Blog Drinking During the Game for many years, Dave became a Very Good Friend to Dave Milne from Elgin in Moray after a chance meeting in the pub after a game at the Valley, a chance meeting because Dave Milne was down to watch his Beloved Charlton Athletic from way up in North East Scotland little did he know when he met Dave (Drinking During The Game) that day that he was in fact born in Elgin before his family moved to London, i also live Moray and it was Dave Milne who encouraged me to Support Charlton Athletic which I have done now for 52 years, Dave Milne also pointed me towards the blog Drinking During the Game which I have followed for many years, sadly a few years back Dave Milne passed away and Dave Thomson put a Lovely Tribute to him on his Drinking During The Game Blog which I am sure shows what a Fantastic Bloke Dave Thomson was, Rest In Peace Dave.
