Hendo joins Appleton’s staff
I was listening recently to Kasey Keller co-commentate on a game for an American TV channel. Keller was quite enlightening and a step up from the normal lightweights Fox, ESPN and others insist on seeking expertise from.
Keller was talking about goalkeeping, a subject the ex-Millwall ‘keeper knows a lot about. He is obviously coaching youth players and said that when presented with a young goalkeeper who apparently can use both feet, float a 40-yard pass to a teammate and command his box with a flying fist, the first thing he asks is ‘yes, that’s great but can he keep goal,” i.e. is he able to keep the ball out of his net.
Even Brighton succumbed to a ‘cock-up-at-the-back goal’ on Saturday, and for all of it’s artistry, I want a keeper playing in the style of Bobby Bolder or Dean Kiely that keeps the ball out of the bloody net.
So then, hopefully Stephen Henderson is of like-mind after being confirmed as the new Charlton goal-keeping coach today by Andy Scott.
Scott said: “He understands Michael’s (Appleton) philosophy and has a similar outlook on the game.” Hopefully that means we might see a clear sheet at some point.
100% agree with you CA, no use nancing around playing tippy tappy back and forth with the defenders and having decent ball playing skills, when you can’t keep the ball out of the net, when shots come reigning in!
The interesting fact is that Isted has yet to make an actual save from a shot! At Stevenage he just stood there, apart from lifting his foot up when the shot came in, and against Wycombe he didn’t even attempt to move when the shot flew in plus he was nowhere near their effort that hit the bar. His only efforts have really been rushing out and putting the player off to completely miss the net altogether.
Whereas Ashley Brewer, apart from one real error saved us time and time again from his saves, mostly due to really poor defending. He must have been quite demoralised that he was dropped, instead of players such as Hecto,r who has been one of the main causes of costing us goal!s
TES I AGREE WHY THE HELL HE KEEPS PLAYING ISTED GOD ONLY KNOW PLEASE DROP HIM NOW AND PUT BREWER IN BEFOR HE WANTS TO MOVE HAS HE UPSET SOMEONE AT THE CLUB.
