How fit is Fankaty Dabo?
Fankaty Dabo was due to sign on the same day as Alfie May in the first week of July, but failed his medical. In recent weeks Dean Holden has had the free agent training with the club and it appears the right-wing-back will accept a differently structured deal to sign this week.
By all accounts Dabo carries a long term injury that has been managed pretty successfully during his career. The Addicks’ medical picked it up, but he is fit, although probably not match fit, and has had part of a pre-season.
Dabo has a very good pedigree for this level. London-born he came through Chelsea’s academy was loaned to Swindon, Vitesse Arnhem and Sparta Rotterdam, a familiar route for Chelsea potentials, and played regularly in his early 20’s.
Coventry City then signed him in June 2019 after his Chelsea contract expired and he had four seasons with the Sky Blues making 131 appearances. He was part of the team that came out of League One, and that settled well into the Championship ending with Play-Off final defeat to Luton in May….Dabo did miss the vital penalty.
However, the fact is Dabo played 84 Championship games before he was released in the summer.
Dabo’s injury does cause concern, and blimey do we have the worst reputation for signing injured players. Right back especially has seen us have some real unfortunate duds in past times.
Yet if lessons are learned from the ridiculous Chuks Aneke signing and he is paid to play and not to sit in the medical room, then Dado has the ability to be a real asset. Tricky one, but right (wing) back is a position that needs strengthening amongst many others with just two weeks remaining in the window.
A crocked player no one has heard of …………. perfect, get him signed up.
We will need to expand the number of treatment tables at the training ground now…I don’t think it’s sensible to sign a player who we didn’t sign earlier.
Maybe play-as-you go contract ?

Hell…we are Charlton and we are better than this and deserve better.
Scott and Methven have two weeks to get in quality players who add and don’t detract from our team.

I was at the funeral of an old and dear friend yesterday, prostate cancer finally claiming him. He was and his younger son, grandsons are, all Addicks Supporters.
There was general agreement that unless the new owners – allegedly backed by an American billionaire, pump some meaningful cash into SE7, like the Ancient Mariner, we are doomed to roam the nether regions forever. Like you, CA, we’ve had enough of the walking wounded signings. Wrexham’s US owners are putting money where mouths are. It’s high time Charlton’s do the same.
On tactical note: v Bristol Rovers we had around twenty shots. There must be at least one Charlton striker (something of a misnomer) who’s curious as to what the net is for. It would be time well spent if the coach could explain that the object of the game is to put the ball into the opposition’s net.
So Egbo goes for a small fee as Holden says this will free up some more monies to bring someone else in, me thinking forward, get stuck in midfielder, but no, we bring yet another Freebie in who can’t get a club, plus who we originally viewed but declined as he is crocked, for the same position!
Yeh this really makes sense, so much for all these players Holden says we are waiting on, it’s just down to the dregs again that no one else wants. As for getting another decent striker in this late, as other columnists have said, any decent strikers who can score goals are always snapped up early in the transfer market!
Which we have witnessed ourselves over the last seasons, ie Bogle comes staight to mind. Hold on, isn’t he now free again? 🙂
What is it with Charlton? We seem to be determined to sign up players who we know are injured or are injury prone. Is it arrogance? Do our physios believe that they are so good that they can manage these injuries and get 40 games a season out of knackered limbs? Time to realise that you can’t.
If fit? Dabo looks a very impressive player, playing last year on youtube. Tenacious and quick into well timed tackles, he has pace, he passes very well with both feet, reads the game well, creates assists, still young, experienced playing at a higher level . Too good for Charlton! If fit? and injury free. I can understand fans being very injury wary – but he’s not/wasn’t rubbish and it sounds like the nature of a deal for him might also have changed. If we do or don’t sign, I hope this SMT know better than some of our quick to dismiss supporters. The (not good enough) Italian lad has gone to Serie A.
I must admit in last seasons play off games he looked a decent player (apart from missing the penalty against Luton). His ability is probably not in question, but does he have a recurring injury problem? If so, our treatment tables are as scarce as NHS beds !!!
I thought so. The shop is about to close and it’s a desperate rummage in the bargain bucket for the past the sell buy date, shop soiled and unwanted returns.
Have to totally agree with your comment…once again we left everything to the last minute.
Other teams are on the ball and snap up quality players fast.
I’m hoping that Dean might have Chris powells mobile number somewhere in his office and maybe he can give him a call on how to build a team of totally new players before the season starts
It seems to me over the past couple of seasons we have got in freebie’s that have just breathed a sigh of relief that they have got a contract with a football team and have got a decent salary but no heart to play for us
That promotion wining team was mostly free transfers and some clever loan signings but they wanted to play for the club and fans not themselves
Why we leave it so late is beyond me
So we are left we players other teams don’t want and players that spend most of the season talking to a physio
Oh well let’s see what happens
We leave it late because we can then get players cheap or better still for nothing. It’s been the same since the Powell days. It doesn’t matter who is in charge of the coffers, they never want to put their hands in their pockets. It’s sad to say, but generally you have to buy your way out of League One.
