Nice but uninspiring

The black away kit completes the set of a nice but pretty uninspiring collection of Charlton kits this summer from Castore.

The away kit has a nod to past days with the green and purple stripe running diagonal across the shirt. Castore surely could’ve have been a little more adventurous with it, and I think most of us would rather see the white as the away and the black as the third kit.

That way we might have seen it more often. I don’t know if there are many clubs in L1 where their home shirts have both red and black in it prompting us the ever wear the white, although these days stuff like that doesn’t seem to matter.

Perth Glory 19-year old Danny Douglas has arrived on trial with the Addicks. The Durham-born midfielder has yet to make a first team appearance in Australia but has been part of a respected Perth academy.

Boring I’d say. What is the attraction with black anyway? It’s OK if you are a referee or NZ All Black, otherwise, in my opinion, no!

I’ve always liked pink and grey together: now that would be a great away strip.

Surely our home strip should be largely red and white which are our time-honoured colours.

The ‘home’ shirt (the best of the lot), I like the deeper red and collar but not keen on the tailored cut.

The ‘away’ shirt, diagonal stripes is a Palace thing so should NEVER be on a Charlton shirt.

The ‘third’ kit looks cheap, like something you would buy at Matalan!

Just get the impression that Castore really not bothered about its League 1 Clubs (ourselves & MKD) so do the minimum necessary to comply with the supply contract.

Have to agree with you regarding the all black kit….god help us when we visit a ground where the floodlights are bad.
It seems that Castore have kitted out the Charlton staff in black too from what I saw on Saturday….they must have surplus black kit they can’t shift.

Agree wholeheartedly re: away strip. Any competent sports phsycologist will tell you teams play better in inspiring colours; which the Addicks shirts are definitely not. A team playing in designer pink is less likely to win. Red is the Robin’s team colour. Black or white are good away strip colours. I have two adult daughters. Any Glasgow chauvinism was knocked out of me years ago. So, plucking up courage: our shirts have a feminine flamboyance (or worse) which is not at all right for a male football team. Like CA,I yearn for when teams played in club colours except when colours clashed with the home side. White used to be fine away.

A whole industry has grown from nothing; like so much other sporty things, this industry globally makes billions. The Scotland Rugby Union team played in pink. It would not be politically correct for me to say what they looked like. ManU we’re stuck in pink shirts. The EPL and EFL need to consult en bloc and then tell suppliers exactly what is acceptable price wise, with particular attention to the ridiculous in-shop supporters’ shirt prices. Nike and Adidas have had it too good for too long………
    End of rant

Doug, you seem to be willing to enter uncharted waters and I’m certainly not joining you there…

As with everything else in the football entertainment industry, money wins.
As for kit, obviously clubs are looking for money from supporter sales. Just look at the silly prices.

Yet surely clubs want their teams to look and feel good (your competent psychologist should make an appearance here!)? So why not employ a design consultant and oversee a competition for fans to come up with what I think would certainly be some good ideas then turn that into decent kit?

Colour should be important. Home kit should always be largely scarlet red and white. What about away kit? Something striking I feel and pink and grey fits the bill.
Third kit? Why do we need this anyway?? Just to make more money from kit sales?

Certainly black and navy blue too should, in my humble view, never be Charlton.
Yet I also see that some fans would like to dress in black too… Why not call it a ‘leisurewear kit’.

What I’d really like to see is a decent Charlton flat cap: enough of the baseball cap tosh! (Yes, OK, I’m a proud Addick old-fogey!!)
