Farewell Thomas Sandgaard

Thomas Sandgaard has penned an open letter to Charlton fans.

Words are easy, and to someone like Sandgaard they often belied the truth or at least the facts. I didn’t really like the way he ran our football club or the way he appeared to treat people. I can forgive naivety or inexperience, but not bullying and bullshit.

Farewell Thomas. You arrived like a tornado and left like bit of heavy rain.

What I will say though is he did at probably great expense and strife see off the parasites who we had before him. For that we should always be thankful.

Sandgaard also never missed a bill or a payment as far as I can make out, even during the pandemic. Other clubs and their owners haven’t been able to say that.

Good memories are in short supply during Thomas Sandgaard’s time, and I was never a fan of the showmanship and hyperbole, but at least we still have our football club.

CA – I have been a fan for many years from 1972, I enjoy reading your cultured blog if i can use that word!
The understanding you have about TS is spot on, and like yourself I will never forget he saved us at the last knocking, some on the forums will use ill chosen words. Our special club was not run in the cultured way it should have been! I know we are not Barcelona, but inknow we have some great fans who really care!

CA please keep up the good work, lots of people are avid readers!

Well said, covers it for me. Now for our next owners. It’s never been boring following Charlton but mostly never a smooth road , let’s see what happens next.

Absolutely spot on CA. Especially about how he dealt with the last lot.
Very interested to see who the new lot are including but trying not to get my hopes up. Makes me realise how we have all been affected by what has been going on.

Sandgaard’s era overall was not what I and most fans hoped. He did rescue us from poor ownership but unfortunately he was clearly naive, when it came to running an English ‘soccer’ club.
I believe he meant well but simply couldn’t afford to do the task he took on.
However, some of the behaviour toward staff by himself and indeed his wife was unpleasant. I hope he reflects on that.

Now we have GFP. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. By the coming season’s end we’ll know if they are an improvement or not. Let’s hope they are!

Fair assessment. Look forward to yours or cast or Charlton dossiers views on Brener and Friedman. Both of whom appear to be astute, wealthy businessmen.

    In earlier comments
I observed that without Thomas Sandgaard’s involvement Charlton would have gone the knacker’s yard, instead of surviving (just) until our new owners proved their pedigree to the EFL, which offers real hope for the new season; in recent years supporting the Addicks being more of a triumph of hope over experience.

Given time true fans will recognise that Thomas did a great deal for Charlton and I for one am very grateful.
Things did not go in hid favour and his management left a great deal to be desired…little sympathy or plan that saw many experienced and valuable staff leave or dismissed.
Some very poor management appointments that caused lots of problems.
I still thank him for saving us !!!

I’m delighted to see Steve Sutherland joining the club as Commercial manager.
He is a devoted Charlton man and he will do a great job.
Welcome to to Paul Elliot who I’m sure will have a positive affect as we sail new waters.

Thanks and goodbye to Thomas and I wish him well with his future business endeavours…

We need to remember that had he not stepped in then Paul Elliot (the other one) would likely have taken us into administration and who knows what the effect of that would have been – points deductions, players/staff leaving and maybe even relegation. Paul Elliot failed the EFL’s Owners and Directors Test and was crazily mounting legal challenges to stop TS from buying the club. It would have been easy for TS to walk away at that point.

But his ownership didn’t work out and TS had a massive reality check that owning a football club wasn’t going to be easy or cheap and once that reality settled in things fell apart. Credit to him for selling up reasonably quickly and not running the club into the ground as say Roland did and selling our best young players to pay the bills.

So we have new owners and these people appear to have genuine amounts of cash behind them. I can’t believe two American billionaires have bought a money pit of a club with no assets bar a few players and are going to be happy to retain our status in the third tier of the game.

I hope this all goes the right way for us we need a big bright light at the end of the tunnel for this great club,I bet there is not any other club in country that got there beloved football club back from the brink time and time again
Thank you Thomas for saving us from dirty scum bag vultures who just wanted to spend money on themselves
Some of your decisions did leave a bad taste in my mouth as some of the people you removed loved this club but we wouldn’t have had one if you didn’t step in
I’m still dubious about the new owners as it’s seems there is a lot of them but let’s see what happens
Wishing everyone a good holiday and I can’t wait for the opening game of the new season
And good luck to the lionesses hope we go all the way and stick one over the USA in the final
