Harry Isted signs from Luton

The 26-year-old goalkeeper has signed with the Addicks on a two-year deal, with the option of a third year, from Luton Town after the expiration of his contract.

Isted had been at Luton since 2017 but only played 3 games. He has spent a lot of his career being on loan in non-league but was given a chance at Barnsley on loan for the second-half of last season and played 22 times including in the play-off final where he was excellent.

I would think a direct replacement for Joe Wollacott, Isted will compete for the no. 1 jersey with Ashley Maynard-Brewer with youngster Ahmed Kone playing back-up.

Dean Holden said “I’m really pleased we’ve been able to bring Harry in. He’s an excellent all-round goalkeeper. He was very impressive at Barnsley last season, culminating in that eye-catching performance in the play-off final at Wembley.”

That’s the first one in that Thomas (or any of the other conspirators) hasn’t had to put his hand in his pocket for . I’m sure he won’t be the last that costs nothing.

Let’s hope he’s better for us than Luton, although as you say he did play well for Barnsley. Not exactly splashing the cash, buts let’s wish him a good start with the Addicks.

Exactly what we needed as a priority first signing, another keeper, when we already have a No 1 in Brewer and just sold Woolcot for peanuts, not that he was worth much and let Harness, a promising understudy go!

Let’s hope it’s not DejaVue, as previously, Freebies in first and then a rush to sign some players at last minute, as all the ones we really wanted went elsewhere, as we didn’t offer enough &/or they didn’t want to come as we didn’t look like a team going anywhere, with owners who want to sell & no real structure in place!

Next signing will probably be Burstow back again on loan, who did absolutely nothing when he returned last time and is not a patch on Leaburn!

I wouldn’t write off Burstow, a year at Chelsea and a year older could have led to significant technical and physical improvement. I would assume we have monitored his progress. Before he got his chance with us I thought he was very promising but needed time to mature. Not many good centre forwards reach their peak before their mid 20s. Other than the Leaburns how many young CFs have made the grade with CAFC?. He will be a WIP and could play well alongside Leaburn without the burden of leading the line.

Another goalkeeper ! I think most Charlton supporters are saying boo hah ! We need players to score goals way before another keeper and the hype from the club over this is way overboard ! Sign some players !

Things could get worse as the next signing could be 30 year old journeyman midfielder Ryan Tuncliffe, on another free, who has been released by Portsmouth!

I think the hype from the club, is to try and placate the supporters. It’s a decent signing considering it was for no money. The problem is we need good outfield players if we are going to make an assault on a top six place, and we are not going to do that with ‘freebies’ other clubs ‘not wanteds’ or ‘loans’. Money has to be spent to get promotion.

Isted is relatively small and as such is a good shot stopper but does not have the physical presence to command the six yard box when defending set plays- not what I think they need.
