Danny Cowley sacked

I watched, as I often do, the opposing manager’s post match interview yesterday and Danny Cowley was clearly very emotional after their defeat to us.
Steve Brown on CATV suggested that Cowley would be gone soon enough and that time was tonight.
Danny and Nicky Cowley were mentioned as possible Charlton bosses after Lee Bowyer left for Birmingham in March 2021, but he was appointed as Pompey’s head coach with brother Nicky joining as assistant.
The pair seemed very liked by Pompey fans and most appear on the socials very disappointed that it hadn’t worked out. Owner Michael Eisner had funded a decent attack at promotion, but their defeat to us yesterday left them with no league win since September 3rd.
Good luck to both of them in the future. They seem like honest and admirable men that have come through the hard way.
Here we go again !!
The life of a league 1 manager is just more than a mayfly !!
The Cowley brothers are to be commended for their honest and professional approach.
My sincere best wishes for their futures.
Another good up and coming English Manager getting the sack some of these players need to look at them selves the money they are on just shows it is not them who get the sack it is down to the poor old Manager I know Danny from his days at Lincoln you could not ask for a more hard working person in the game don’t be out the game to long someone needs you try Norwich would just suit you both.
Agree. He comes across as one of the good and genuine guys. I am sure they will both get another chance. Hopefully Ben Garner will too.
CA There’s a big difference between Cowley and Garner, Cowley is similar to Holden as they are both honest and say it like it is, no bull, whereas Garner always has some sort of excuse, like most of our previous managers when under a downward spiral. Plus they both change tactics &/or make changes as soon as possible, if a game isn’t going right, whereas Garner will just stick to his original selection & rigid formation, until it is too late and cannot seem to grasp that the same continuing tactics don’t work, which everyone else, including the Charlton panel, can see week in week out!
He has this sort of arrogance, that he is right and no matter what, he is not going to change things, as it would undermine his way of playing. This really showed, when he accused Port Vale of not trying to play football, when his own brand of Charlton continually playing totally negative boring football in their own half, was deemed okay!
I was never impressed by Garner as in the PV v Swindon playoff game he just let the game drift without making changes, so I rated his in game management as poor.
Sad to say my initial opinion was correct. You seem to have reached the same opinion.
@rierti @Mike Fair play.
League One chews up another manager…
If you get a job managing in L1 you need success really quickly or else. Liam Manning another good young manager got the chop at MK Dons prior to Christmas. In his case they sold on a couple of their stars from last season when they were a game away from promotion and didn’t replace them, the team struggled, lost confidence, fell down the league and so the manager pays with his job, ditto the Cowley brothers, Ben Garner and others.
And all no doubt with big pay offs to soften the blow until the next job comes along and another pay off beckoning.
You make your bed and have to lie in it.
No sympathy from me, sorry.
Grant McCann the next L1 manager to get the chop today.
