God Save The King
There has been many days or times when I had wished I could be in London, walking its streets taking in the moment. July 7th, 2005, the opening of the Olympic Games in 2012 to name two.
I am no royalist, but today is another one of those days where I am kicking my heels at home with all the TV’s on.
If I could be home I know I’d feel compelled to make my way to Buckingham Palace to pay respects and to witness history. I remember I did the same after Diana’s death and got the tube to Kensington Palace after work to see the carpet of flowers left to honour her.
Today I watched on American TV, which has had blanket coverage since Thursday, the new King’s proclamation. It’s a different time but I was glued to the constitutional and ceremonial traditions.
There was a confidence and determination in King Charles III speech last night. It was moving and comforting and now time will tell what kind of modern King he will be, but I hope he still advocates some of the causes he believes in. Some of those issues he has cared about before they were even mainstream, will bring him closer to a younger population.
“And to my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: Thank you. Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years.
May flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest.” 😢

Well there’s people in our life times who are not loyalists, however the world looks on to something they could only dream. The protocol the pomp in which things have only altered slightly over a thousand years, if you are to watch TV the funeral the coronation to come it will be unique occasion. Yes god save and bless those of all walks of life and King Charles the 3rd
As a young boy I watched the state funeral of Winston Churchill (in black and white) and the memory is still vivid in my mind. Now nearly some 60 years on will witness the state funeral of Elizabeth II. I am going to find it very hard to keep my emotions in check. I can count the times I have cried in my life on 1 hand – the death of my mother, the birth of my children (Clive Mendonca at Wembley) – but this may well be another.
My sincere thoughts and condolences go out to all the American people who lost their lives in the 9/11 attack.
I visited ground zero a year after the tragedy and still recall the positive spirit of New York people and the sensitive way the area has been protected.
Recent and past events puts life into perspective and I know my comment is not Charlton related.
This is not always a Charlton related blog and I appreciate your comments Chris.
I spent a fair bit of time in the South Tower on the 103rd floor and lost a number of people I knew.

We have something special in the UK, which many Countries are envious of, having a Queen, who was loved throughout the World and now a King who hopefully will be looked on as the same.
It’s at times like this when we are at our best with everyone pulling together and even the hardened are softened and bitterness and rivals are put aside.
So let us pray and hope that in this new era, we can all move forward together and make the UK a better place for all. God Save The King

Totally agree. We are on holiday for the Funeral day but are going up on Wednesday as our late Queen is taken from The Palace to Westminster Abbey. She has been my Wife and my Queen for 67 years and I can say I am proud to have served her RIP Your Majesty.
Yes the world will stop to see what only us Brits can do, a state funeral with pageantry at it’s very best. Then the coronation of the new King.
My dear Dad George born in 1930 is currently in Queen Elizabeth 2nd hospital in Woolwich ( very appropriate as him and my mum are staunch royalists ). His heart stopped briefly yesterday but he is holding his own. We are both lifelong Charlton supporters and have seen and attended many of our great clubs highs and lows. Very poignant venue for him right now and please all pray for his swift recovery. God save the King.
