Paul Linger RIP

Former Charlton Athletic midfielder Paul Linger sadly passed away on Friday aged just 46.
He played 27 first team games in the mid-90’s for the Addicks after coming through the academy. After his time with us he moved to Leyton Orient, Brighton, Welling and then had more than a decade in non-league.
I remember him as a slight but skillful young player with the heart of a lion. My brother and I were fortunate enough to be at Portman Road the day Linger scored a peach of a volley in the 5-1 rout of Ipswich. That was the day Carl Leaburn scored a hat-trick. I think we were 0-1 down at half-time.
Paul was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 18 months ago, but thanks to the efforts of his friends, fellow players and supporters a staggering sum was raised that gave him a sadly all too short lived reprieve. The Paul Linger Trust will ensure his name lives on and will continue to fundraise to support his young son.
Sleep tight Paul.
Those last three words have so much more meaning than the standard three letters with dots in the middle….Sleep well in deed.
