Charlie Kirk signs from Crewe
We’ve waited a long time, but after 23 days the Addicks made another summer signing with Crewe Alexandra’s Charlie Kirk joining the club today.
The 23-year old winger was a product of Crewe’s academy and has starred for the Railwayman during the last few seasons racking up 181 games.
Kirk was destined to leave Crewe this summer with his contract entering the last year. Sheffield United attempted to destabilize the long conversations between Charlton, Crewe and Kirk with a late bid, but Steve Gallen finally got his man after we also tried to sign him in January.
Kirk has signed a 4-year deal, will wear the no. 20 shirt and it is thought the fee was in the region of £500,000.
In my own concept of a summer rebuild Kirk meets my aspirations of a stand-out young player at this level with plenty of games under his belt who is hungry to move onto the next level.
I’m hoping this now kick starts a bit more action in the market. Kirk will prefer an attacking left-back alongside him like he had with Harry Pickering last season. A left back is very much required as is a centre-back. I’m worried that Pearce is backing up the injury prone Inniss and Famewo. Elerewe is just 17, Barker 18.
A loan may suffice at the back and I’m certain we will utilize the loan market, but we need goals. A striker and an attacking midfielder are a must. I don’t imagine Adkins will rely on Harness on the bench either. Stephen Henderson maybe an option as GK.
I also reckon Ronnie Schwartz is being considered for an outwards loan. Be lovely though if he stepped up now we might start getting some balls into the box from wide positions.
I’m really pleased with his signing, along with the others we’ve made. A statement of intent, going for the right players if it means waiting is the way to go.
I liked Kirk when I saw him a couple of years ago on a TV highlights show, the name stuck in my memory as my first boss was a Kirk, He did not stick wide and was comfortable moving inside. I hope further signings are forthcoming as I fear we will need to catch up points as I am not confident of good results in the next 3 games with the current squad,
Liam Millar is now a distant memory; what a replacement we have here now. Brilliant bit of work done by Steve Gallen and Co. Relishing the season ahead. COYR.
