Phillips gets his move

I suspect if we hadn’t been relegated Dillon Phillips would be in goal for us today, but he honourably and respectfully made his career ambitions known and he finally got his move yesterday.
I’m unsure that Cardiff was a team and place he dreamed off when he and his family came to the conclusion that after 17 years at Charlton it was time to move on, but Cardiff have added well in the window and will be in the promotion mix I’m sure.
Phillips may have to work hard and be patient to get the number one shirt. Alex Smithies is a good proven Championship ‘keeper, but Dillon has been patient and assiduous before.
Phillips is also a very good goalkeeper, and I would say last season one of the best in The Championship. There was a lot of interest it seemed but whether no one made the move, or Phillips didn’t fancy it we’ll never know. Yet, I know I’d rather be fighting for the no.1 jersey for a promotion chasing Championship club than be a 3rd choice Premier League ‘keeper and sat at home watching Soccer Saturday.
Always a shame when a young academy player moves on, but it is the way of the world, and has always been our world, but at least we got a fee for him, undisclosed of course, and with Bowyer already selecting Ben Amos for the season, Phillips’ departure does not leave a gaping hole.
The very best of luck Dillon, and we will follow your career with pride. Thank you for everything and especially thank you for this:
Yep, good luck to him and one that I don’t really mind leaving – what would he gain from playing at League One for another season? He should be playing at a higher level and I think Cardiff is a good team to go to. Ok they are a yo-yo club but he’ll be either a starter or on the bench and he’ll know that it’s about taking his chance when it comes. Hopefully we got some decent money for him and Amos is a decent replacement and already at the club and Ashley Maynard-Brewer needs some first team experience which he wouldn’t get if Amos got injured and Dillon Phillips was still at the club. Plus we free up some space on the wage cap.
