Charlton Athletic 1 Wigan Athletic 0

A scrappy and sometimes untidy performance but we came away with the much needed 3 points today at The Valley.

It’s almost impossible to judge the team, and I think it will be most of this month before it’ll be fair to make any appraisals.

Nonetheless there were promising moments from Paul Smyth, Andrew Shinnie, Omar Bogle, Chris Gunter and I did like the look of Ryan Inniss.

We won so I’ll take that but I question what Ben Watson offers (so far), apart from bookings, That’s four bookings in four games. I wasn’t fond of a midfield of Watson, Pratley and JFC. They offered little going forward and any attacking play was left to Smyth and Aneke to work the channels or anything Alfie could produce.

Gilbey and Maddison would start I suspect when they are fit and ready. Maddison has an ankle knock not to be concerned about.

Chuks had a very good game and was our best player, although it’s incredulous to me that he can’t last 90 minutes. Smyth got into good positions and was a nuisance particularly in the first half.

We defended stoutly, Garner is a nasty so and so, and there was plenty of claret spilt. Once again we sat too deep late on, but we saw it through without any real drama. Onward and upwards.

Bow’s thoughts: “We started really well, on the front foot, and we will be more clinical once we start working with the group. The new lads did very well, taking into account we signed two of them yesterday!”

  1. Rare also that Wigan didn’t make a substitute. Rarely ever happens these days.

Maybe Watson is our “nasty so and so”. Most teams that beat us at this level have one. These type of players don’t just offer play, they keep others playing on the edge. Agree, let’s judge this team at end of November

I’m not judging anything! What do I know except my club has been saved and our management team have stuck by us, All I want is to be back at the Valley.
