Charlton Athletic 1 Accrington Stanley 0

That game had it all. Well only after the 82nd minute.

We didn’t play well, and were unable to get any luck from Stanley’s big back four. The game descended into a niggle contest in the last half hour and with 10 minutes to go a mass brawl followed an Addicks corner. No one seemed to know who the guilty and innocent parties were, but one of the lino’s called it and the referee sent off Stanley keeper Maxted and Lyle Taylor, who from what I have seen and heard, spent the whole incident face down on the floor.

Bowyer said they will appeal, which rarely ever works, and Taylor will be a huge loss for three games.

With the game into injury time, just 5 minutes which seemed ridiculous, the games only takeaway was Taylor’s sending off and how much we will miss him. Then a Reeves shot hit a Stanley player’s arm and we were awarded a penalty. Cue more chaos as Accrington’s players, Hughes in particular, lost their marbles.

I made a cup of tea (with very shaky hands) in the time the kerfuffle took to calm down before Karlan Grant, with nerves of steel, put the penalty away in the top corner. He wheeled away to celebrate with a dozen Addicks who had joined from the Covered End.

There were more niggles and kerfuffles happening in the tunnel afterwards as Addicks celebrated with their heroes.

We were not particularly good today, but that was a massive 3 points for Bowyer and his never say die team.

Addicks at The Valley: And Nothing Else Matters; Doctor Kish;
Bow: “Did shape and Albie down to start and Tariqe fell on him. He’s done something to his ankle – going to be out for a while. Another six week one.”
Elsewhere: Leaders Portsmouth lost at Oxford, whilst Luton comfortably beat 10-man Peterborough 4-0. Sunderland drew at Scunthorpe 1-1. Scunny equalizing late. Burton also equalized late at Doncaster, and Barnsley thrashed sorry Wimbledon 4-1.

    Albie Morgan will be a big miss if out for a length of time. Where was Hackett-Fairchild he should have been on the bench. I have seen Ocran several times – he is not ready for 1st team football. If the Taylor suspension is not reversed on appeal then we must get a replacement in this week. I hope the idiot who ran onto the field and injured Bielik gets a ban.

    • Hackett-Fairchild was injured as well. I don’t know to what extent.

    The mass brawl happened right in front of me – I genuinely did not see what Taylor did to get a red card, there was a mention that he might have kicked out, but he appeared to have been stamped on and if so it was in reaction to what is basically an assault. Even less culpable was Jonny Maxted, I can only think that the ref/lino saw a boot go in and thought he was the guilty party. And the pen was definite – the Accrington Stanley defender had his hand outstretched and whether it was deliberate or accidental he handballed it. We just about deserved to get something out the match, we were poor in the first half but better after the break but struggled to create a decent chance. Jonny Williams looked good and in effect he’s still in his own personal pre-season and tired after 60 minutes or so but he looks well up for it and came on to the pitch after the game to celebrate with the fans. He had to be lead away from the scuffle in the tunnel but returned to do the leap out of the tunnel.
